I know Dubois had a down season but I feel like this is a little too low in terms of a return
Agree with this. I'm one of the many who is not too big on PLD, right now---especially when one considers the players moved to acquire him---but I'm also of two minds on how to move forward with this player. I think the Jets want to see him for a full "normal" season before making any decisions on his long-term future as a jet, and I feel that's the way to go. But I also know that this team needs to do more than it's doing to become a winner . . . from management to coaching to the personnel on the ice. It's a team that's built to win now (with some prominent holes, yes) and the players that the Jets go forward with have to be those whom the organization is confident can achieve that objective.
A lot of people here would suggest bringing Stastny back, and it's been bandied this move is necessary "in case Dubois doesn't work out." My issue with that thinking is that if you're preparing for failure, it's likely going to materialize. Especially if the same coaching staff returns who "likes to play his guys." If this organization thinks Dubois will perform better next season and even meet (dare we say, exceed) expectations, than play Dubois as such. Make him the undisputed number 2 center and play him with consistent wingers. But don't use valuable cap space on an insurance policy. If the organization really lacks that much confidence (and I'm the last guy to blame them if they do), then trade him sometime before the start of the season & acquire the best assets available to make this team better NOW. Not later, and not AFTER he's had another "down" year and his trade value is diminished even further.
Lastly, I've been resistant to say it unlike many other Jets fans, cuz I like Maurice, but this team needs a new man at the helm. The structure/system needs an overhaul, one where this team is not near the top of the league in high percentage scoring chances allowed every game . . . to start. With the number of really good coaching options available, Winnipeg would be remiss not to see if a new coach makes some significant difference.
Sorry for the rant! Loss is still so fresh!!
