Grading the Canes free agent signing from today:

Antti Raanta: A- (Good backup. Steal if he stays healthy)
Tony DeAngelo: FFFFFFFF- (I'd rather not start about this)
Josh Leivo: B (Good 4th liner. I like how he plays and it's a good AAV)
Ian Cole: C+ (Love the addition, but a bit too much $ for my liking)
CJ Smith: C (Not a super talented player by any means, but he's still a solid depth option and an AHL All-Star)
Frederik Andersen: D+ (Something feels weird in my gut about this signing. He has a chance to bounce back, but I have a hard time seeing it. Regardless it's an overpayment and all I can hope is that he regains his .900+ SV%)

Pretty much the good signings were Raanta, Leivo, and Cole, while the bad signings were Andersen and TDA. Smith will likely just play in the AHL, so it doesn't change the team much anyways, though I do like it for depth.

Overall: C

We took some major steps back letting Hamilton, Mrazek, Nedeljkovic, Reimer, and McGinn all walk for these guys, but there is still hope that we can maybe make one more add for our forward group in the coming days. Fingers crossed for Saad.

Honestly if the Nordiques returned and Saskatchewan got a team could argue for it. The battle of Canada vs USA every Stanley cup final would be very entertaining

To add this one - more realistic way is to make salary cap from a flat one into a prorated one with taking such things as taxed into consideration. Like the teams in cities with higher tax can spend to the $81.5M while the lower ones can spend only $79.5M for example. Tax differential would be what dictates the prorated cap limit.

So the Canes have 15 million in cap space right now and the only notable left to sign in Svechnikov which will be a 6-8 milllion deal I'm guessing. It's time to make a good move. We should go after Saad or Tatar.

Yep, that could work nicely. Ironically some people said why not implement a luxary and super luxary tax to teams who spend over like in Basketball/Football. That would mean you want 5-7 teams to dominate and everyone else to suffer. I get enough of that watching basketball dont want it in hockey

My guess is instead of Khudobin to Chicago

A deal is worked out where MAF (50% retained) goes to Pittsburgh for Jarry and a 4th or something

Khudobin then goes to the NYR

I think Rask is either gone or brought back on a very cheap deal before the deadline

Devils free agency grades

Dougie Hamilton: A+ Top 5/10 defensemen that wanted to come to NJ. Fits the defense well and fills our void of a #1 defenseman.
Jonathan Bernier: B+ We overpaid here a bit here but Bernier would be a great pairing with Mac
Chase de Leo: A- Cool name, was almost a point per game in the AHL last year and is still relatively young
Brian Flynn: C+ Was solid in the Swiss league but is pretty old. I guess he's there for leadership
