It's not even a rumour, it's just a correlation of two things an author built an article around. It's a) Robert Thomas remains unsigned and is an offer-sheet target b) The Coyotes have cap space.

It's not even worth it for the Coyotes. Any compensation that does not include a 1st will be matched. Any compensation north of that literally gives St. Louis a lottery pick and the best odds at Shane Wright.

Bringing this back up to give some thoughts on it. IDK about the rest of the conversation.

Louisville is a long shot maybe. It's got a decent population centre, sure, but at 1.5 million it's on the lower end of the scale of cities which host major sports teams. While an NHL Louisville team wouldn't be competing with the other major leagues, Louisville has a strong culture around it's college teams.

Another thing to look at is past hockey teams. Milwaukee and Houston get brought up a lot because the former currently hosts an AHL team and the latter did for many years. The last hockey team in Louisville was an AHL team in 2001 called the Panthers, with this great logo where the panther looks more suggestive than intimidating. Not having a hockey presence in the area already would make it difficult to bring one in (Vegas and Seattle both had smaller teams before their NHL clubs).

Lastly, the arena. The Panthers played in Freedom Hall, a downtown arena which is still active, but has been superseded by the KFC Yum Center. The new arena has two problems: one, retrofitting a rink would be a problem and two, it's owned by the same people who own the LA Kings. That would mean the NHL team would need to go to Freedom Hall, which is a very old building and the NHL isn't going to like that.

TLDR: Louisville is an interesting suggestion but unlikely. College teams, no current hockey team and an old arena would make it difficult to move in.
