The Oiler don't need Howden. In comparison to Devin Shore, he plays a similar game with poorer career stats and he will be more expensive to sign. Zach Jones shows some very promising potential, but the Oilers have some good young LD and their needs are greater elsewhere in their roster.
Kassian is an easy target for many fans because of his contract and his inconsistency. However, with respect to the contract, Ken Holland holds more culpability than Kassian or his agent. They'd have been fools to refuse the offer and ask for less money and term. That being stated, Kassian received that offer because he represents a difficult to find combination of toughness and skill, and has a demonstrated record of pretty good success playing along side high-end talent. The Rangers might want him, but they will be competing with others in order to get him. If he is traded, I expect the deal will not be a cap dump and that it will bring Edmonton an asset, or two, that fills a gap in the roster and can immediately improve the team.
