You're over-valuing Marner and under-valuing Matthews IMO.
Here's how I see it:
The Matthews trade:
1. With Matthews going to Columbus and Laine going to Toronto, it could be Laine that scores 40 goals and wins the Rocket Richard Trophy.
2. The Leafs have been searching for a Top 6 LW that can play with Tavares for quite a while now and Laine could be the answer to that problem.
3. Matthews is not able to be the guy that prevents a first round exit and something's gotta give.
4. If Matthews was not the same age as Laine, Laine would have been picked 1st overall by Toronto instead back in 2016.
5. Max Domi is the son of Tie Domi.
6. Tie could convince Max to sign a team-friendly extension with Toronto at the end of next year and be willing to stay in Toronto for the rest of his career.
7. Domi fills a bit of the void at centre left behind by Matthews, even though he's better suited at LW.
8. If Laine is not the right fit on Tavares' left side, Domi could be instead.
9. Domi has the grit and toughness to help win a playoff round, which Matthew does not have.
10. I thought about adding Boone Jenner as well but Columbus might only allow Toronto to have only one of Domi/Jenner.
11. Also, Jenner has spent his entire career with Columbus, is less expensive than Domi and is more likely to stay in Columbus long-term than Domi.
12. If Toronto got all three of Laine/Domi/Jenner, they would be over the cap with no obvious solution, considering that Laine's qualifying offer is 7.5 million.
13. I thought about adding Liam Foudy for Toronto, but I think Columbus would balk because they want him to be their #2 Centre.
14. I thought about adding one or both of Columbus' low 1st round picks for the upcoming draft but Columbus would balk if Toronto was allowed to have what is very likely to be a fresh Top 5 pick.
15. Still having the Tampa and Toronto 1st round picks would allow Columbus to feel better about losing a top lottery pick to bring in Matthews.
16. The lottery pick that Columbus has could have a better chance of helping Toronto get past the second round than Matthews.
The Marner Trade:
1. Calgary has been searching for a Top 6 right shot RW for a very long time and Marner would be the answer.
2. If Brett Ritchie is playing RW on the second line with Gaudreau and Monahan, there's an issue in Calgary.
3. Giordano has no value for Calgary because he's going to be taken by Seattle in the expansion draft.
4. That means the trade should be looked at as Marner for Monahan + Mangiapane + the 1st round pick that's not lottery protected.
5. Monahan has regressed significantly from year's past and is living on borrowed time as a Calgary Flame, considering that he's the subject of a lot of trade speculation recently.
6. Marner is an absolutely enormous upgrade over Mangiapane on the wing for the Calgary Flames.
7. Marner can not only score a point per game, but he's also a really good two-way player who can kill penalties and eat up a ton of minutes.
8. Marner has a way better defensive game than Matthews.
9. Although the 1st round pick is not lottery protected, it is more likely going to be 12th/13th overall than 1st or 2nd overall.
10. In the Draft lottery, Calgary will only have 22 winning lottery combinations and all the other teams combined will have 978.
And that's that
