A few thoughts
1) Marner is a first line talent. He's overpaid (especially with the flat cap) but he's without a doubt a superstar. If Dubas wanted to move him he could easily find a suitor without taking a bad contract back. The expensive contract only reduces the value of the return somewhat but its worth noting actual $ owed are significantly less than his AAV at this point (talking to you Melnyk!). The Leafs would never just terminate his contract.
2) He's definitely in his own head when the playoffs roll around. I'm not sure what it is but the simple plays he makes so effortlessly in the regular season evaporate and he starts trying to do too much every play (I call it playing "Hero Puck" if anyone else uses that term). His time may be done in Toronto if they don't think they can solve the problem between his ears that's sprung up every post season. IMO Keefe should have separated Matthews and Marner to open things up and have MTL chase the matchup. Marner likely would have done better playing away from the Danault matchup and playing with players who typically only make simple plays (Kerfoot, Galch, Engvall, Mikheyev etc) even if they lack finishing talent.
