Eichel for Marner is the new Meta

Description
Drafted Guenther 3rd overall after Beneirs and Eklund went 1-2.
Sebastian Cossa at 33 and Logan Stankoven at 37.
I think the Leafs are slightly underpaying in the trade but I don't want to add anything to draw the ire of their fans on this site. It would likely be a prospect anyways.
Future at goaltender is solidified with UPL, Portillo, Cossa, and Kallgren in the system.
The rest of my picks would be BPA with a small bias towards smooth skating defensive defenseman who make a good first pass and goaltender Owen Parker in the 7th round.

I'm low on Owen Power personally. I'll be fine if they take him as that's what the consensus is but I would rank Beneirs, Eklund and Guenther ahead of him.

You might be right but I disagree trade value wise. Centers always have an extra boost and one can argue Marner has never had to drive his own line. I don't agree with that statement but it's arguable. Dealing superstars is always weird.

Why would u Sabres fans even consider this ? Didn’t u see what marner did in the playoffs, absolute jack. Keep Eichel he’s a real 1C, marner can’t be the number 1 option on team wanting to go far

For sure. I'd agree that Eichel is a bit more valuable.

I mean, your logic would mean that Eichel is horrible, since he hasn't even had the opportunity to fail in the playoffs.

Yea Eichel doesn’t have Matthews, Tavares, nylander, Reilly on his team. Eichel is miles ahead of marner, it’s not even close

EIchel had plenty of fire power around him that all of the sudden just dried up. I get that you Leafers are hot and bothered today because of what happened, and always want to blame it on someone, but Marner is very close in terms of skill level to Eichel.

What firepower did Eichel have?

Jeff skinner, Sam Reinhart, Taylor hall. Omg wow such superstar players with great expectations, totally comparable to the leafs for sure

Skinner was a 40 goal scorer two years ago. Reinhart was on pace for 38 over a full season this year, and Hall went back to being a near-point per game player when went to Boston. Saying "Marner is only good because his teammates are good" is a hilarious overreaction by a fanbase that probably deserves the fate that they ended up with.

Edit: And if you check Sabres fans expectations pre-season, they were going to be a playoff team.

What was skinners pace this year and last year ? How was Taylor hall in Buffalo? Idgaf what they did on other teams or in previous years, how does that even make sense to compare that? I know us leaf fans have been disappointed over the last couple of years, but thank god were not the sabres. Literally have been rebuilding for the last 10 years, and not ur only good player wants out too.

The issue is if trading Eichel is a forgone conclusion, we could do a lot worse than Marner.

I would hope acquiring another star player is enough to keep him and Reinhart and attract some players to be competitive. The youth (Cozens, Mittsy, Asplund, Dahlin, Jokiharju, Borgen) took huge steps forward after the coahing change. I'd prefer to try ans be competitive now than any further tear down beyond what must happen and the shedding of negative impact players like Eakin, Okposo, Risto, Miller, etc.

So, the fact that those players were good without Eichel, and then they weren't good anymore means nothing, eh?

Would be surprised to see Cossa fall that far. I would think a team like Columbus or Detroit, who don't have a great #1 goalie prospect would snag him with a late 1st round pick.

Yeah I think that might happen. Goalies are voodoo though and spending a first round pick on one is a big gamble. To see multiple goalies in the first round would be crazy since Wallstedt is a for sure.
It's only happened five times since 2005 with Price and Rask. And Oettinger, Knight and Askarov were taken independently. Oettinger, Knight, and Askarov are yet to make their marks but of all the first round goalies taken since 05, 3(and the kids possibly)/15 were worth taking. Taking a goalie in the first round in the NHL is a lot like taking a running back in the NFL. Even the Carolina Panthers would have been better off not drafting Christian McCaffrey.

For reference:
Vasilevskiy and Subban in 2012
Campbell and Visentin in 2010
Pickard and McCollum on 2008
Bernier, Helenius, Varlamov and Irving in 2006
Price and Rask in 2005
