I actually think trading for players rights should be worth about a 2nd or 3rd. If you are able to get a deal done, you're basically trading for them when they have x amount of years left on their contract. Would RNH with 5 years on his contract be worth a 2nd? Absolutely

You're not trading for RNH with 5 years on his contract. You're trading a 2nd for a small window to negotiate with RNH. He can still sign with another team if he wants to.

If a team is confident that the player will sign with them, just wait till free agency so you don't have to waste a pick. A 2nd is still valuable. A 4th/5th is the absolute most you should trade for a UFA's rights.

I said IF you can sign him. You wouldn't trade for his rights if you weren't 100% sure you could sign him.

If you were 100% sure you could sign him, you wouldn't waste an asset trading for his rights. You'd just wait till FA to sign him without giving up a pick.
