Quoting: yikes
I don’t think Toews was bad tho; I mean I think the general consensus by fans (who aren’t experts) was that Toews was a great pickup. And I think a lot of fans thought the Isles traded their best defender (if it wasn’t Pulock in their eyes).
Even if the GMs don’t love Toews, fans and analysts loved Toews for Colorado. It was more of a light hearted “hot take”, but that doesn’t excuse the swindling, or bette put; poor sale by Lou.
And Toews himself look phenomenal a lot, I don’t think he was carried (I know you don’t think he was an anchor).
Toews was brutal in the playoffs - that’s what half the isles fanbase uses to justify trading him, obviously it’s extremely dumb to trade a 27 year old two way D based on 10 bad games in a bubble. During the regular season he provided top pairing value.
From an analytics perspective , pulock was better than Toews last season. Pulock was top 3 in WAR and his GF/60 was over 2 SD. IMO the “isles traded their best defender” takes spread pretty fast after all the analytics accounts on Twitter posted their charts showing that Toews was a top 30 defenseman. It was just an easy way to clown on the isles and their fans and make it like the isles defense was left with nothing.
Of course analysts thought it was a good move, but they thought of Toews as a solid top 4 puck moving D, not a top pairing D that can have a Norris caliber impact.
Toews was great this season, but his GF/60 skyrocketed because he played with better finishers and the avs have 3 incredible lines. He wasn’t carried, but playing with stars increases production. Toews didn’t drive play offensively as well as he did last season with the isles but he put up more points and his GF\60 was almost 3 SD higher.
Pelech, pulock, Toews are all top 20 D this season.
1. Pelech
2. Toews
3. Pulock
