And whats wrong with that? Hes given the organization how many years of his hard work, and in return wants that same organization to go out and help him get 1 more cup?

He knew what he was signing up for with that fat extension. Same with Eichel, don’t sign for a premium long term if you want flexibility and not want to potentially rebuild. Same thing with Karlsson in San Jose.

He’s being paid 11 mill per and he’s a #4 D at best right now. The kings aren’t ready to contend, management has done a great job with the rebuild so far and they shouldn’t deviate just because he wants instant gratification

But is there anything stopping the kings from making moves in the offseason to rebuild faster? I dont see any problems with the Kings going out and signing some very solid free agents

They signed athanasiou and traded for maata last season - the kings lack high end talent right now, free agency isn’t going to help them much. The only move that makes sense to accelerate the rebuild is trading for Eichel - if not it just makes sense to stay patient because in 3-4 years the kings could be a top 3 team in the league

Doughty was objectively bad in the previous 2 seasons (2018-19 and 2019-20), but he was fantastic this season. If the Kings were better he would have been in contention for a Norris.

Don't get your money because you can't anticipate your GM making bad moves and sinking the team.

Seems like a sus philosophy tbh.

I think guys should get every cent they can. And there’s nothing wrong with being unhappy, but at the end of the day you signed the deal and must honor it.

I agree to an extent but I think criticism and overall dissatisfaction mustn't go out the door if you put pen to paper. I absolutely encourage players to dunk on their own management if all they do is fumble their way into bad decision after bad decision but I don't think they should be able to force trades. It's kind of the inverse to a GM not having to be loyal to a player or a contract because hockey is a business. Feel free to trade me if and when you see fit, but if you turn Ryan O'Reilly into nothing more than a 4th liner and a prospect defenceman, you better be willing to face the music.

Doughty's incredibly competitive and LA's rebuild has probably taken a hit on his self-perception. I don't know who'd take his contract on though.

This is a problem with the structure of American sports in general. The rebuild and contention cycle with a salary cap makes sure that theirs some sort of parity, but it doesn't help guys on big contracts who can't go somewhere else because their being paid too much for what they provide.

Horrible take. He had an awesome season this year, he was in the Norris conversation before the deadline. You're right the king's have nailed the rebuild so far tho.

He was in the Norris conversation because of his reputation - he’s still recognized as a #1 D when he’s clearly not anywhere. He’s a powerplay specialist

No, he was in the Norris conversation because he was having a legitimately good year. He fell off when the king's fell of but to say he's a #4 is ridiculous.

Doughty could be 40 years old, put up 2 pts in an 82 game season and mainstream media would still call him a Norris caliber D because of his reputation years ago

Valid. That doesn't change the fact that this year he was legitimately good. It wasn't just "mainstream media" that had him in the Norris conversation. It was everyone because he was back to playing like a #1 dman.
