Description
I'm not a leafs fan... I hear a lot of talks about Dubas being the best GM in the league and I figured I'd try to make the leafs better using their assests to deliver up to teams asking price and needs to prove Dubas could do better. He doesn't seem to care too much about player development, using this knowledge, I used many of the teams top prospects and remaining draft picks to get players who need the leafs prospects more than the leafs. Both the Sabres and Ducks want prospects, obviously the best prospects have to be used to get the better player, Eichel. The rest of the prospects worthy of being traded went to Anaheim to get Rakell. To make things more even, the Ducks received the 2022 1st round pick and the Sabres received the 2023 1st round pick. Leafs could use a cheap and good RD so I cleared up cap space by giving away Kerfoot and threw in a 2022 2nd for good measure. Dunn wants out of St Louis so I figured I could get away with paying him the same amount but with a 3-year deal. Last but not least, I had to get rid of some serious cap space so I decided to get rid of Jake Muzzin. He has been good for the leafs but I knew in the end, Eichel and Rakell were worth much more than Muzzin. That being said, he is still a really good D and the Leafs got him for a prospect, a depth player, and a 1st. This meant I could still get an underrated player and a 1st for Muzzin. After considering a couple of teams, I chose Philly because they could honestly be so much better and I think getting a top 6 D could seriously help them try to clinch a playoff spot next year. Philly also has a couple of underappreciated players who just don't fit well. For example, Nolan Patrick, who a lot of people consider a bust. I think Patrick can actually succeed on a team like Toronto as he would be playing with Hyman and Mikheyev.

Other than being completely wrong about dubas and how he operates, especially with prospects, and making the defence much worse for no reason, and over paying for rackell who has spent the last few years trying to remember what a goal is, eichel would be nice

Dubas could do better by emptying their prospect cupboard for another $10M player, regardless of who it is? And as a result, handcuffing them with resigning just about anybody for the foreseeable future?

That's an interesting take.

You make them better by adding what they already have a surplus of (offensive players) and taking away from their biggest improvement from year to year that's finally got them to win a division (defensive play) ... Dubas is smarter than this. He values puck possession, and with that defence Toronto wouldn't get the puck back very much unless it was in their own net. You say Dubas doesn't care about development, which couldn't be more wrong. He does and uses it differently than the common hockey brain around this league does. Most people see that as having to have high draft picks and top ranked prospects, but they're already proven to be good at a younger age. After the top 3-5 picks in a draft, the talent level generally falls off quite a bit and Dubas knows that he can get later round picks cheaper and stock up on them and develop those guys. It's how he got Robertson, Niemela, Kokkenen, Abramov, Abruzzese, etc. they're are real good prospects that Dubas took in later round and they're developing. Idk how that says he doesn't focus on development

Anaheim LOVES that trade -- especially if it occurs before the expansion draft, so that we can flip Engvall to Dallas (who need another qualifying forward) for something nominal.

Are Flyers fans delsusional? (No offence) .. not saying Muzzin fits the team's need but for that value, you take it and run and if you have to you either flip Muzzin for something else you do need, or move one of your mediocre left defence you already have for something else. People seem to forget on this site that one move in one thread doesn't mean that's the only move the acquiring team has to make. They're allowed to make other trades too.

"Dunn wants out of St Louis...

... so I figured I could get away with paying him the same amount but with a 3-year deal."

A couple of questions...

1- Ehh what now?
2- Ehh what now?

Neither of these notions are based in reality, and the Blues are certainly not paying to eat Kerfoot's 2x3.5 for you. Sorry, this trade idea is delusional on every possible level.

You know Dallas can just sign one of their pending free agents to an extension for next season and that will fit their requirements for the expansion draft right? They don't have to make a move for a guy. Toronto actually needs to keep Engvall to meet the expansion draft requirements.

So you think that trading a 1st round pick in what many think will be an extremely deep draft plus Patrick is worth a is worth a 32 year old 2nd pairing D man? Ya, no thanks!

Then whats the point of making the trade int he first place. What can you even flip Muzzin for that would be equilavant of 2022 1st and Patrick.

It would likely be a pick between 25-32 in a draft that's top heavy, not "extremely deep" by any means. & Muzzin instantly becomes Philly's best defensive defenceman if he were on that team. Unless you wanna stick with your 30th ranked defence out 31 teams? And again, if you didn't want Muzzin, you could easily flip him for more than this. Go get a right handed defence or something. But the value between Muzzin and Patrick/1st is heavily favoured in Philadelphia's favour.

Patrick isn't much at this point. Hasn't shown he's anything more than a bottom 6 guy. A 1st round pick between 25-32 doesn't have a whole lot of value either. You could easily flip Muzzin for more than that, or move another guy and keep Muzzin in the top 4. Flyers fans can't really argue much better defence when they have one of the worst ranked defences in the league

We thought our pick this year would be in that range but is not. And why would we acquire a player just to flip him...that makes no sense because if a team was offering more then the Leafs would take that deal.

Yes, I do know that, just as I also know that if Toronto trades Engvall prior to the expansion draft, Toronto can just sign one of their pending free agents to an extension for next season and that will fill their requirements for the expansion draft. Thank you, Captain Obvious.

In the future, you can assume that someone who comments on the qualification status of a player coming to a team also knows about the effect of that player's departure from a team.

He doesn’t like player development? He literally denied a trade for Mackenzie weegar who’s been one of the best defencemen in the nhl this season so he could have space for sandin. He literally also said he wants to see him as an integral part of our playoff run. Robertson got some games in, I just think he needs more time. He’s a junior superstar too me rn and he just needs more time to learn. He managed to get liljegren in some games. Don’t give me that. He also gave up ZERO prospects at the deadline and still made the team much better. Don’t give me that he doesn’t like player development. That’s not enough for eichel. They want proven talent. That rackell trade is awful for the leafs. They don’t need him at all and liljegren has looked great so far and will only get better. I guess the kerfoot for Dunn trade is ok? That Muzzin trade is just, WHAT? Our best defensive guy for Nolan bustrick? This whole thing is just really stupid.
