Tweaking the Blueprint

Description
After receiving feedback on my last post and reading Coyotes beat writer Craig Morgan’s off-season preview, here is the revised version of the off-season blueprint for AZ.

Trade Rationales:

Pitlick to SEA: I like him as a player but he’s been hurt too much and Fischer played himself into a protection spot in the final 5-10 games IMO. I could see them protecting him and letting Fischer go too.

CBJ: put a similar trade in the last post but Jackets fans said Texier was not available. Foudy fits well on the 3rd line where he can learn to play C from Stastny.

BUF: A big RD is high on AZ’s wishlist this off-season and Risto fits that mold. If Buffalo selects Power, Johnson gets pushed down the organizational depth chart and becomes somewhat expendable.

FA Signings:
Stastny: coyotes should target a vet middle 6 C to help the kids learn how to be NHL regulars and provide some scoring punch.

Martinook: I hated that we traded him and would love to bring him back to be a bottom six cog on the right side.

Nemeth: any vet LD that can play bottom pairing minutes

Rittich: a 1B goalie to pair with Hill and split games

Sceviour: a guy for the press box who brings grit and toughness to a weak team.

I took the younger players (Soderstrom, Jenik) out of the lineup because Morgan notes in this piece that they will require more time in the minors getting top line minutes and building chemistry. Hayton may need the same but for the sake of this post I’m assuming he shows up ready to take a regular NHL role. No need to rush the prospects when it’s likely that we won’t be competing next year anyway.

The Coyotes already completed the most important part of their off-season today when they fired Tocchet. I would love if Quinn came available from NYR but if not I would also really like to see Mike Van Ryn come back. As long as they don’t hire Torts

Idk if Foudy has a high enough ceiling to warrant that trade and a 30ish overall in a weak draft... why not keep NickS and try to sell higher on him later

Buffalo is giving up too much in that trade. Kuemper only has a one year deal, without an extension in place that is simply too much. Without Johnson it might be fair as things are right now. If you want Johnson in the deal you’re going to have to add something Buffalo would actually want.

Kind of wonder if Quinn & Davidson are blackballed now ... but yes, absolutely, he would be a good add for yotes.

Doubt Columbus moves either Texier or Foudy. Honestly you’d be better off trading Schmaltz else where or lowering your ask. He isn’t worth 2 1st round picks.

Like @The_Cannon said I based this deal off of what he commented on my last post. I’d also do the deal for Bemstrom and drop the pick coming from AZ

Yeah I don’t think the Rangers fan base treats him fairly.

You could say its overblown, but you just can't say its not warranted

Like I said this is assuming Buff drafts Power. He becomes by and large more expendable if they have 2 top tier LD on the roster. Risto and a 3rd in this draft isn’t enough. Need to add a decent prospect to make it worth it for AZ

I guess. If you told Rangers fans 2 years ago that they would be a fringe playoff team again after just announcing a rebuild I think they’d take it. Like it or not the roster still has flaws that Quinn can only do so much about

I love the improvement don't get me wrong but his game management has so many holes, its a real ceiling dropper

If Schmaltz is on the market, there HAS to be a Dumba-Schmaltz deal possible, even if both teams will be back in the same Central Division again next season.

I’d love to do that and I’ve proposed it before, but Wild fans always come out of the woodwork and say they’ll only trade him for Hayton + (not happening). I think Minnesota will get Kuznetsov instead (makes more sense for the Caps to trade him to the western conference, Wild get a Russian to go alongside Kaprizov).

It’s interesting though. Pre TDL hockey writers were saying that a Dumba-Schmaltz swap only made sense if the Wild added. But the court of public opinion on this site seems to be 100% on the other side of that argument. It makes a ton of sense to me just for expansion draft purposes alone

I think that in order to disguise the fact that it's Schmaltz-for-Dumba, there will be at least one additional element on each side. But you're right, the Wild may go for Kuznetsov if in fact he's on the market.

Sabres easily decline, it's too much. I would trade Risto for Kuemper one-on-one, but nothing more. Johnson is actually a good LDs prospect picked at the end of the first round and he he is developing correctly.

I'd call it a maybe as written (with Foudy) and a "sure, when can we make the phone calls" with Bemstrom. Not that I think one is better than the other (I actually think more of Bemstorm's potential future), it's just the whole "who I think is more likely to be an NHL center" deal.
