Let the kids play. After this next season, Loui, Roussel, Holtby, Beagle will come off the books. That frees up 16M in cap space! So during the 2022-2023 free agency, Benning should weaponize his extra cap space and sign a solid RD such as Klingberg, Jones or a LD such as Lindholm. I hope that we will be able to get Stetcher back as a third pairing RD. I don’t see Juolevi as being a part of our future, but maybe he will be good as a third pairing D.
I love our new, cheap, high energy bottom 6 and I think Graovac, Boyd, Hawryluk, have deserved to come back next year. Maybe Vesey but Haula, Miller, Motte, Highmore, and Pearson are all capable penalty killers. The only thing I disliked about Benning was that he brought back Pearson when he is easily replaceable (by a guy like Coleman) AND he could’ve brought us back a low 1st or high 2nd. But, with our 2021 high first round pick, we could draft a solid defencemen or someone to play 3C behind Petterson and Horvat, but we all know how that turns out (Hodgson lol). I also think it would not be a good idea to draft Hughes because we have Rathbone in contention for the 2nd pairing in the future. A guy like Clarke, Eklund, or Lysell could definitely help us in a year or two.
In a weaker pacific division next year, I see the Canucks finish 2nd or 3rd in the division (behind Vegas and Edmonton). So don’t make any major changes this year, wait until the free agency after that to solidify us as someone that could make a splash in the playoffs.
This is looking not to bad... I’d be concerned about no other countrymen for Podkolzin to adjust to this team. It obviously helped Petey & Hoglander. Maybe sign a Russian player instead of Haula. All n all not to shabby.
