Meier to NJD Burns to SEA Adding Key UFAs and a Few Shrewd Depth Moves

Description
Of course this is all taking into account the need to have cap space next offseason not just for Hertl and Ferraro (possibly decent raises for Knyzhov and Korenar too), but also add to have flexibility to add to their roster.

Signing Granlund and Nosek allows for Cooch to move to Hertl's wing, which would allow for this Meier deal to make sense. NJD get their young top-line winger for that Swiss connection.

Sharks get a young (and importantly, cheap) candidate for Bortuzzo's replacement in Walsh in the deal, who has the upside to maybe be an offensive 3rd pairing guy paired with a defensive vet in Vlasic. Mercer projects to hopefully be a decent middle-6, likely 3rd line center, and can replace Nosek in 2 years.

Simek and Donato to anywhere for anything. They just doesn't fit in SJ's lineup (though if they were both right-handed it'd be a different story) and SJ needs the cap space. They'll be good depth pieces elsewhere similar to how Bortuzzo fits with SJ next season but not STL.

Also, I don't know what happened to SJ's 2024 picks rounds 2-7. I'm assuming they're Ottawa's.

The Blues have no need to trade Bortz. He'll be staying unless there's a crazy overpay.

Like I said in the description, anywhere for anything. Maybe Simek goes in the Meier deal too -- I could see that making more sense to NJ than DET.

I've seen a decent number of AGM posts here from Blues fans which ship off Bortz for around a 4th rounder (saying STL has better replacement younger players who should have his spot next season), but I'm kinda surprised by it. If I'm SJ I pay a 3rd plus Donato to get it done (max offer).

Yeah, an unnerving number of Blues fans are fueled by really, really bad takes about the team and its players. We don't have any serious RDs coming up and certainly no one that fits Bortuzzo's profile (which is very much needed in this team). Out of context, your offer would be more than fine, but this team needs cheap contributors and the grit Bortz brings. He's also among the leaders in the clubhouse.

Besides, most of these Blues fans are usually just moving out salary for ridiculous acquisitions, so I would not put too much stock in some of their ideas.

Simek is 28 and maybe a 3rd pair dman with 3 seasons left on his contract. I'm not sure you will be able to get a positive return for him.

Perhaps most Blues fans realize Bortuzzo will be exposed in the expansion draft and they would rather get something for him than nothing

I highly doubt Bortz will be taken, there are probably 5-6 other guys that would be snatched first.

Unless the Blues aren't protecting any players it would be quite difficult for Seattle to find 5 or 6 players worth taking in the draft

Blais, Barbashev, Walman, Mikkola, maybe even Scandella. That doesn't even include Dunn, or cheap role players like MacEachern, or someone like Sundqvist that might need to be exposed. The Blues are deep.

Every team in the league will be exposing a few middling lineup players like that. If Bortuzzo is actually a difference maker as you are purporting then he would be the clear selection for Seattle.

Middling?

tears of joy

And I didn't say Bortz was a difference-maker. I said he was a good value contributor with certain strengths that fit Blues needs. He's a solid veteran playing for peanuts, so he'd probably have the most value to a contender with those same specific needs.

and Seattle I think.

They enter the league with a fresh slate. Pick up a promising prospect in Merkley then retain and flip Burns to a contender. Some other GM would bite on that for sure.

An 18th overall pick (a good one), a late first between 25-31, and a 3rd is fair value. The two prospects are promising for sure (neither is likely to ever reach Timo's value), but I'd say the value's there. I know NJD fans want Meier too but it's going to take more than Boqvist and the Isles 1st. Not asking for a Holtz/Meier swap or the NJD's 1st.

I think this is a realistic package for what Meier would fetch. Don't think it's unreasonable, just have to keep in mind that future value should be given up -- it's not the type of 'take a flyer on him for spare parts' type of deal obviously.

How many contenders can/would take on a 36 yo on 4x8?
