Description
-- 2021-22--

Next season is all about trusting the youth.
-Let Romanov take some of Weber's minutes. Including on the PP.
-Put Poehling in a position where he can succeed instead of burying him on the 4th line.
-Keep Suzuki and Toffoli together.
-Play Kotkaniemi with offensive wingers
-Play Caufield with speedy big bodies
-Let Jake Evans fully embrace the 4C role and learn with Perry.
-Trust Primeau as the backup goaltender and sign/trade for an insurance third goaltender.

-Let the UFA veterans not named Corey Perry go.

-- 2022-23 --
-Continue the young players takeover.
-Sign Nick Suzuki to a long-term deal similar to Nico Hischier's
-Sign Alexander Romanov to a bridge-deal similar to Travis Sanheim's and Darnell Nurse's.
-Sign Cayden Primeau to a bridge-deal similar to Thatcher Demko's

This looks really good, although the cap might be a bit tight. I doubt the cap goes up this soon, and this is likely on the very low end of what Suzuki would command.

I don't think it's impossible for the cap to go up 1.5m in two years. If not, then Suzuki's contract is more likely to resemble this one since I admit I've somewhat deceptively undervalued him.

The cap after this season will be tight unless there is a major increase. Only Drouin is coming off the books and Kotkaniemi, Caufield are in need of new contracts. On a brighter note, by 2022, Weber's contract is starting to be low on real money and I wouldn't rule out a buyout-retirement-LTIR or anything that puts him off the books.

Also, I was just thinking, stylistically Poehling would probably be a perfect replacement for Tatar with Danault and Gallagher.

I very much agree. It's probably a closer replacement for Armia next season but if he grows steadily, by 2022 he could make up for Tatar's top 9 contributions.

Yeah. I still think it’s a stretch for the NHL to make back their debts plus extra in one season, but we’ll see how it goes. I do think you’d probably have to replace someone like Kulak with a cheaper option, and I wouldn’t be surprised if one or both of Harris/Norlinder are NHL ready by 22-23.

It is only a minor change but you're right, it is a likely outcome.

With almost 20 million is basically dead cap space in Price and Weber this team is off to no where.
It's basically the same team as they have this year and they are struggling.
They need to find a way to clear out 18 million in cap, and bring in some better players with that cap space.

I'm a down-to-earth man so you would never see me dumping Price to Seattle or anything that resembles that nonsense. But it's the same General Managers who voted Price as the 2nd best goalie tied with Hellebuyck this offseason. There's a tiny chance someone tempts something for him, but still too unlikely to post something around that.

I don't know why so many people view Shea Weber's contract as a fatality. It's not that bad. He's done in a year or two and no matter how it ends, it's the Predators that are in trouble.

what do the predators have to do with any of it.
According to capfriendly the whole cap hit is MTL.
They need to find a team that needs cap but doesn't want to pay anything. The problem though is teams don't want a contract like that for 3 years.
The best they can hope for is LTIR. But either way, that contract is a mess and I don't see anyone wanting to touch it for another 3 years.

The Shea Weber contract is one of the last few with Parise and Suter that were negotiated under the previous CBA. Some recapture penalty was created to dissuade teams from signing those massive front-loaded contracts and the penalty is given to the teams that signed the contract which is the Preds in Weber's case.

capfriendly shows none of that. Just like if Carter were to be bought out, LA is only on the hook for it's 50%.
      Shows no recapture.
Even though he too is on an 11 year deal.

Jeff Carter's deal ends next season and he's probably playing till the end of his contract. Let's say he retires after this year

There is indeed a recapture penalty for both LA and Columbus. The penalty only applies for the years when the cap hit was smaller than the total salary and for Weber, those years were in Nashville

      Weber_recap.jpg

It has been amended and the recapture penalty is now less expensive, but longer. Let's say he retires in 2025 :

      2025-26
      $7,857,143
      2026-27
      $7,857,143
      2027-28
      $7,857,143
      2028-29
      $999,999

The only players left who are eligible for such penalty are Carter, Crosby, Quick, Parise, Suter, Weber, Keith.

It doesn't have to be Stalock specifically, just any lower-end backup/luxury 3rd goalie
