Karlsson and Doughty both got way bigger contracts in their Norris days, and while those particularly haven't aged well, they were top 5 D at the time, and cap/value growth also has to be taken into account - you're going to be in a bidding war for one of the top 5 defensemen in the league right now, and this contract won't be as impactful near the end of its term. Plus he is EXACTLY what the Jets need. His value is likely going to be $8.5-9 million at first, but then teams will have to bid for him. This is not unreasonable at all

It probably takes 9.5 to get him to Winnipeg anyways. So I would do it.

Lowry will be protected though, likely Harkins is taken by seattle. Beaulieu will be moved this off season, brossoit will get 1.25-1.5m or they’ll give the backup role to berdin. Heinola will take Forborts spot.
