Offer Sheet EP40

Créé par: Michael
Équipe: 2021-22 Flames de Calgary
Date de création initiale: 30 avr. 2021
Publié: 30 avr. 2021
Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
I think the Canucks might match at that price, but it at the very least you leave the cap situation of a division rival extremely tight. Should they not match, I think a 1st 2nd and 3rd from next year is a fine price, any higher levels probably isn't worth it. If they match, you also leave them having to plan to re-negotiate again with him in just two years when he could ask for an even higher price, giving no cost certainty.

They definitely match and it doesn't really change the cap situation

I'm looking at a lot of Armchair GM's and most have Pettersson at 7-8M with term. Even if the Flames don't get him, it leaves them in a tighter position with a flat cap, and then the need to renegotiate in a few years. IMO there's a lot of benefit for CGY even if the Flames don't land him.

The problem with this plan is it also relies on moving enough cap out to make the offersheet. You chose to move Monahan here and if we fail to get EP40 then we are left with a giant hole

Could the Monahan trade happen after they decide not to match?

I would have to double check this, but I believe you can be up to 10% over the cap during the offseason (so $89.5M total) so in theory you wouldn't make the Monahan trade until you land Pettersson.

Pettersson is gonna get 7-7.5x3 but even at 8.7 they can fit both him and Hughes in pretty easily. The cap situation isn't as bad as people think

You're probably right, but that 1.2-1.7M is going to matter in a flat cap. CGY could also structure heavier salary in Year 2 meaning his next QO would have to be quite high for them to retain his rights. It's as much about screwing VAN as it is about getting him.

They might match? The only question is do they match in five seconds or wait the week to annoy Calgary.

There is a 0.000% chance vancouver doesn’t match.

Isn’t Hughes a 10.2(c) RFA? He’ll be cheap.

1st off as a Canuck fan you can ____ off lol.

But aside from that, I have wondered if Monahan would be a good option for Vegas.

You can structure the deal however you want doesn't really change anything but I hope you're ready for a retaliatory OS on Dube

Why would EP40 agree to this offer sheet? The Canucks are very likely to match and it just makes his situation in Vancouver worse for very little monetary gain on his part. Only way he would agree at that short term is if the Canucks were offering him somewhere south of 7 mil aav. First step would be making it a 5 year deal and walking him to free agency but he probably doesn't want that either with the flat cap and the new US TV deal. He's just not a good offer sheet target with very little to gain moving teams unless you are going to give up those 4 1sts.

The most Jim Benning threat of all time. "You better stop or I'll overpay your bottom six forward".

For real though, a good petty offersheet could absolutely ruin the Canucks long term. Have to overpay him to match the offersheet, then in two years you probably have to overpay him even more, because now his camp has the leverage of "I can just sign my qualifying offer" which could be like 11mil.

Obviously would never happen in a fuddy duddy sport like hockey, but I'd love to see some GM really take full advantage of the offersheet system.

That deal is insanely favorable to Pettersson, what do you mean? Hockey players have very small windows to make their money, and signing this OS would have the potential to be unbelievably lucrative for him. Expecting any players, especially star players to turn down millions of dollars "for the good of the team" is just naive.

Its not very favorable at all. Its earning around $700,000 more than he will get in Vancouver for 2 years, around 1.4 in total. In the meantime he will be playing under the Darryl Sutter system. Dump and chase, defensively focused, very little offense. His offensive numbers will drop accordingly and he will lose that in a matter of a year or two on his next deal.

The golden rule of offer sheets should be don’t half ass it. If you’re going to make one, make it so it’s a legit decision for the other team. Montreals was so stupid last year, and this is in that category. Go 7x11.5.

The more interesting contract projections will be the ones from Evolving Hockey which should be updated on May 1st according to their tweets. I believe their model was based off the one Matt Cane did a several years back (and he stopped updating when he joined the NJ Devils front office)

As an aside, I wonder if Carolina will send an offer sheet to Nick Suzuki after the 21-22 season

Evolving Hockey has Laine's projected contract value at 2yrs at $4.667 million AAV and his value for a 1yr contract is below his QO. To me that tells me he will sign his QO and not opt for arbitration given how much his value has fallen this year.
