Description
If I'm SJS I'm trying to explore trades like these - Where you get out of worse long-term contracts for better or shorter ones.

For example - people think there are redeeming qualities to Ristolainen; might as well get Burns at 5 for a few years. Stick him on the 2nd pair and PP1 and get something more useful than Eriksson.

Minnesota might think they have their #1C for now in Couture, but he's been secretly bad for a while now. This would allow them to go back to protecting 3 x D.

The Zucker experiment didn't work out in Pittsburgh - to their knowledge. Do they want to try on Evander Kane?

Skinner has been buried cause his picks hasn't bounced well enough. Is he a 9 mil player? No. 5 mil? sure, while Vlasic is a dinosaur that can still play *some* defense. Skinner is the upside player here, and I'm actually sure he'll score if given a proper chance.

The Islanders trade is a little out there, but Meier has some insane seasons behind him. I think Wahlstrom is hoping to be that kind of player, so why not just push the Islanders window forward a bit, and let SJS go ahead with theirs?

Just trying to get some input in how you'd feel about these trades from the other side. I'm not a SJS fan. I'm not here to get bogged down with fans of other teams saying "HAH, my player X would NEVER get traded unless 4 1st round picks and your 3 best player on full retention are involved" like okay Habsfan69420blxze why are you so ****ing mediocre if Paul Byron is the best player in the league

So yeah, let me know what you think, conceptually. Is there any realistic way for SJS to turn it around faster than in like 6-7 years, which it looks like at this point?

Great ****in team, but why Forsberg and do you think Zucker would waive his NTC to come to a rebuilding team?

Some...uhhh interesting trades here.

Sharks get absolutely shafted by the Pens, Isles and Canucks. But then conversely, the Sharks fleece the Wild. Only trade which could be considered fair is the Skinner-Vlasic one but even with that, I don't think Buffalo would touch Vlasic.

Anton Forsberg as the starter is something else too.

Good point - Could've put in "Placeholder, Goalie". I'm not sure. I do think most players want personal and team success, and if Pittsburgh isn't great while Zucker isn't great for Pittsburgh, maybe he'd like to go enjoy the sun? But yeah, I'm not sure anyone waives obviously, maybe least so Vlasic for ****in Buffalo out of all places

I'm not one to say if a pick belong here nor there tbh. I think these are frameworks that can be explored - and I do think taking on salary while giving up a proven player in Meier is one of the only ways to get young talent like Wahlstrom. I actually think they're clearly winning the Pittsburgh one, 'nucks one is weird. SJS obviously get out of the larger contract, but maybe it's more realistic at 2 mil retained for the exact same cap hit..? Idk

Now, I don't *think* Forsberg is the savior San José needs, but I *know* that Jones isn't!

So Isles get to dump Ladd and Komarov and only have to trade Wahlstrom for Meier.

Send over the paperwork please.

This makes sense, right? And I don't even think the Islanders are that attached to their picks, so I think it makes a ton of sense!

I think you are underestimating what you could get in this trade. You could easily get a 1st, or more prospects like Bellows or Salo.

Maybe - I don't know how Islanders feel about Wahlstrom yet, but from my point of view he's looking really good!

Huge no for Pittsburgh. That contract is too much for too long. Zucker had struggles this year scoring, but they would be better off letting Seattle take him than having to get back that type of contract in return.

I think More GMs will be willing to leave some good (but under performing) players with big contracts exposed, just to clear the cap space with the flat cap.

Mmmmmm kind of? Trades like the Canucks or Isles one are valuable because they get us assets for roster players while taking on cap dumps like Ladd, Eriksson and Komarov (albeit not enough value in this instance but I digress). But the other trades don’t make a whole lot of sense because you’re going in different directions. Taking on cap dumps implies we’re rebuilding (which is fine) but the other moves are more lateral which wouldn’t make sense in a rebuild scenario.

Disagree with the take on the Kane trade, he’s having a career year and is maybe overpaid by 1-1.5M at the max. Zucker has been super injury prone and has only put up 13 points this season to Kane’s 42.

And that's why I'd sell on Kane - he's not driving offense, just scoring putting up points. Idk what the Sharks lines are like, but Hertl is having a monster season, so is Balcers, while Labanc is doing some heavy offensive lifting. I'd keep those around and be prepared to ship anything else for a more solid long-term return.

I'm trading with Minnesota and Buffalo cause you're getting the better player on the better contract in return!

Your justification for accepting a trade for Skinner is Buffalo’s same reason for not wanting to make the deal. Other than the fact that Vlasic is burnt toast and a completely useless cap dump.

Well yeah. I haven't created 5 trades I think will benefit both teams, that's actually super hard to do. But most of the time a team wins the trade. Buffalo's handling of the Skinner situation makes me think San José could win that trade. If I'm making an ACGM for Buffalo I'm sure as hell not trying to get Vlasic for Skinner, that's not the point of this exercise.

Oh my god, uh. You don't watch a lot of Sharks games, do you? Hertl has been struggling with literally everything this year, Labanc is so not living up to his contract, and Kane is pretty much the only one of our Big Ass Contracts who is coming even close to earning his money.

As Zucc said, your trades don't make sense as a whole. You gotta decide if you're going for picks and/or prospects for a rebuild situation or if you're just trying to move some of our terrible contracts and taking whatever you can get in the name of cap space - doing both makes no sense at all.

Also, if Vlasic were to waive his full no movement clause to go to BUFFALO of all places, I'll eat a croc. Shoe or animal, your choice.

So, as for your last point, I've already pointed this out. I've said from the start that this is conceptual, and not to get bogged down in the details of trades being exact in terms of value.

The idea isn't to offload contracts at the cost of picks - because its not feasible. There's no cap room really to take on much more salary than what is being done.

So to my overarching point: trade the players that *look* like they're having better seasons, and stick with the ones that are having better seasons than it seems. I think Hertl is one of the best centres in the league. He's driving offense, he's supressing opponent's offence, and he's even adding to the power play. You can tell me what you want, but I have the numbers backing me up. If you saw him drop a puck I can tell you he picked up two others, cause that's the effect he has on play.
