All indications is that he is going to waive, at 33years old making 6million, missed all this season wiht injury, will miss the playoffs due to the injury, was hurt to end last year as well. Why would seattle take him? There is no benefit of him not waiving, he would be hurt dead money on seattle.

If he doesnt then hes bought out during the 48 buyout window prior to the draft and finalize lists.

Makes sense. The same argument was made for Phaneuf in Ottawa for the Vegas draft and he chose not to waive. Anything is possible.

There was no realistic chance that Vegas was going to select Phaneuf. His contract was terrible and he was a shade of the player he used to be. He felt that he was entitled to his NMC since he negotiated it, and refused to waive out of a matter of principle, not because he thought he would get selected.

EJ has a NMC in his contract and has every right to refuse to waive if he so chooses. There is an equal opportunity that he will be selected by Seattle as Phaneuf would by Vegas (i.e. Zero) That's why the situations are similar.

They are not even close to similar, the fact you are trying this hard to compare the characters of phaneuf and Johnson is as far away from similar as you can get

Two players unlikely to be selected by the new expansion team that have NMCs that can choose not to waive them because they don't want to? It is exactly the same situation.

It’s not even close, a 30 year old guy played a full season and still believed he could play and waived his nmc once already to be in Ottawa bc he has a life and family in Toronto and received no guarantee Ottawa would pay to protect him if he waived vs a 33 year old guy who has missed 14 months of injury and very much would receive that insurance of protection if waived bc of how the gm has don’s business with his vets in the past out of respect

Not even remotely close outside of both have nmc

He has a 19 team trade to list, and COL will exercise that or outright buy him out if he doesn’t waive. Besides being wrong about Johnson which btw you had him doing in this post like @coga16 said, why would the Avs protect a 3rd pairing dman over the ability to protect 3 more forwards. On no planet does Graves get protected before Kadri actually for that matter there is no planet that Burakovsky gets protected before Kadri.

I'm not saying that the Avs will protect him before trading him or buying him out. I'm only saying that it's not a foregone conclusion that he will waive his NMC just because it's good for the team. He negotiated that clause into his contract and, much like Phaneuf did in Ottawa, may choose not to waive it when the time comes.

What’s his incentive to not waive. He has been a COL team player since being traded there. Given the option of not being picked in the XD and being bought out and looking for a team to sign you after missing basically the last year and half, what do you think he chooses? I mean you can be obstinate about it, but it was a foregone conclusion he would waive or get bought out the minute Toews signed his extension.

if it comes down to that then he will be bought out. imo its a pretty easy decision for EJ to make

I agree that if he doesn't waive, he will likely get bought out. Maybe that's what he wants? Then he gets guaranteed money for four years and can go sign a second contract elsewhere.

Why would he want that? Hes owed 12M over the next 2 years on his current deal and would only get 8M spread over 4 years if hes bought out. Plus hes been injured all year so I doubt he would make much on a new contract. Financially his best option is to waive his NMC and stay put on LTIR until hes healthy to play again

No need to make this more complicated than it needs to be

My only point was only that no one but EJ knows what EJ wants and fans shouldn't take it for granted that he's going to waive his NMC just because it's better for the team. There's any number of reasons why he might not choose to do so. Mine was only a hypothetical example.

So that’s the plan after basically not playing the last year and a half, being 33, and there being a Covid cap? Come on my man, it’s ok, the Avs fans are right on this one. Because honestly who is going to sign him and for what the league minimum? And also get to miss out on playing for an elite team.
