Description
I’ve been really impressed with Brooks’ play in these last few games. He’s playing with a lot of pace, using his speed to beat the opposing team’s slower bottom-six players. He’s usually the first in the zone and he used his persistence with the puck to draw the penalty that led to Thornton’s goal. Brooks really made the fourth line stand out and combine that with the way he played on the penalty kill, he needs to be an everyday player. When Mikheyev is healthy Engvall should be out and Brooks in. It would be great if Keefe could find more minutes for Brooks. I’d like to see him at 3C for a couple of games. If the Leafs lose Kerfoot to Seattle having Brooks to take his spot will be more than fine.

It’s crazy how confident Sandin looks despite not playing much hockey. He’s so quick with his skating and stickhandling and in the offensive zone he gets pucks through on the point when on the power play, and that’s not seen enough from the Leafs. I would love to see Sandin get a look with the top PP unit.

When completely healthy and the playoffs start I’d like to see these lines:
Hyman Matthews Marner
Kerfoot Tavares Nylander
Foligno Nash Mikheyev
Simmonds Brooks Spezza
Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Holl
Sandin Bogosian

I like Brooks, and I'm board with giving him some more games, and I'm fine right now having him in ahead of Engvall, but I'd need to see way more of him before I'm confident that he can just step in and excel as a 3C in this league.

Let's not forget Holl was a Norris front-runner according to most fans after the first 20 games, Thornton was going to be a point a game guy all year, Simmonds was the missing piece of the PP and the top 6, etc.

Let's not jump the gun here, pretty small sample size. He hasn't even played 100 min in the NHL yet.

Agreed, not suggesting he should be the permanent 3C this year or next, going to post a ACGM on how I’d like that to look. But as for right now he should be a mainstay on the 4th C with all the injuries. He used his persistence with the puck to draw the penalty that led to Thornton’s goal. It’s the first time in a few games where I really liked the 4th line.

As for next year my hope is Nash is resigned and you have Matthews Tavares Nash Brooks down the middle

I'd like to have a little more depth. As much as I like Brooks, he's the same age as Nylander, so I don't know how much higher his ceiling is at this point.

Rolling with those 4 at C could leave a pretty big gap if either of Matthews or Tavares missed some time.

I mean I don’t think any organization has the depth to fill the spot of a Matthews or Tavares should one go down. I certainly wouldn’t be comfortable with Kerfoot as my 1C or 2C. Nylander moving over to C absolutely. Plus they now have SDA with the Marlies and hopefully Hallander comes over. If there is two positions of strength right now in the organization, it’s C and LD.

The 4th line has looked good for the past 3. I was very surprised to see how effective Spezza, Thornton and Simmonds looked vs Vancouver. Hemmed them in their zone for long stretches. I like Brooks too but he's not playing much unless major injuries exist.b

And Kerfoot >> Brooks, so they would be weaker down the middle next year if kerfoot was gone.

We have no idea what Brooks is at this point.

Matthews, Tavares, Brooks and Nash - would likely be two 1Cs and two 4Cs.

Like I've been saying, I would need to see a lot more of Brooks before I'd be comfortable pencilling him as at 3C next year.

If the Leafs protect 4 FWD 4D, Kerfoot is gone. The C depth for Seattle is terrible. Even if they are able to get Johnson(TBL) or Johnsson(NSH) through expansion the Dman available to Seattle will make Kerfoot an easy selection IMO
But yes, Kerfoot is better than Brooks

Exactly. That's why I would like the Leafs to have better options than Brooks and Nash at 3C/4C.

Try to sign or acquire a decent 3C, and have Brooks fight his way on to the team. He can play LW as well.

Well the UFA class isn’t brimming with talent could be that big of an upgrade over Nash. Options that could fit in into the Cap next are Wennberg, Cizikas, Haula, Nosek, and Soderberg. I feel confident Nash is going to turn a lot of Leaf fans into a believer of him

Sure, but Nash has zero offence, and will 100% be part of a checking line, so he won't contribute at all to secondary scoring. That's why if he's brought back it's more important to have another decent C in order to provide some offence.

Which is why handing that job to Brooks would be very risky at this point.

IMO, even if it's Kerfoot taken in the exp draft, something will be happening with the Dcore.

That's why I mentioned trade as an option for 3C.

Who would you target/trade out?

Hard to say.

A decision on Rielly likely has to be made this summer. I doubt they want to let him walk for nothing, and cap will be very tight this summer, so I'm thinking they decide now if it's best to trade him for a decent piece and free up capspace or will they re-sign him and what does that number look like?

Sandin looks NHL ready now, fills a similar role and should be a Leaf for awhile.

More likely though, Dermott (who I really like) plus something could be dealt for a decent 3C.

I just don't see them starting next season with designs of being a legit cup contender with Nash and Brooks at 3 & 4 C.
