Toronto protects: F - Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, Kerfoot, Engvall, Anderson
D - Muzzin, Brodie, Holl
G - Campbell
Seattle takes Dermott
Moving Rielly isn't the easiest move but i think it makes sense for a few reasons.
1 - His defensive metrics according to Hockeyviz.com are the worst of his career and thats with having the best d partner he's ever had in Brodie.
2 - It would clear cap space to make a big play for Hamilton
3 - I don't want to pay Rielly on his next deal where he will want to get paid big. I do however want to pay Hamilton because i think he will be better longer and not just offensively like Rielly is
4 - Could add a real good prospect in Lundkvist who is NHL ready and right handed which is an area of need on this team and would allow Brodie to switch back to the left side
5 - Could protect 3 D in the expansion draft vs 4 and protect more forwards
Numbers for those interested(over the last 3 seasons among d men to have played at least 2800 5v5 minutes)
Hamilton is 1st in SF%, FF%, CF% and xGF% and 7th in GF%
Rielly: is 1st in GF%, 54th in SF%, 39th in FF%, 30th in CF% and 22nd in xGF%
Not resigning Hyman is going to cause some disagreement but my thoughts are these:
- He's going to be 29 when his new deal starts and if its likely a long term deal i don't think we should be doing that for a non core piece
- He's shooting a career high at 5v5 so i think he might be due to regress in the coming years
- He's having a career year in GF%, SF%, FF% and xGF%
- Because of all those things he's going to want to get paid and we can't afford him even if we keep Rielly as Hyman would have to settle for $4M or less
Just my thoughts and ideas so feel free to disagree but lets talk about it if you do
There isn't even an alternate universe out there where the Rangers trade away their Top Defensive Prospect for an expiring Contract...just as their competitive window is beginning to open.

Teams make deals all the time and the Rangers have fox and Trouba now and Schneider and Robertson coming as well. Go in now and add a good offensive d man who can help them not rush all their kids to the NHL.
That is a good d core for sure. A lot of youth which is why I thought Rielly might interest them but I can see the idea of just rolling the kids. What about Schneider and a 2nd for Rielly then?
Our window is now though. 5 years from now, that window may not be as open.
If you wanna talk long term, a $9M contract will only screw up the cap situation even worse.
I think Hamilton helps us more now then Rielly does. But yes fair point that $9M does mess with the cap more in the future. My only counter would be I think Hyman and Rielly make more then that combined on their next deals and bring less value then Hamilton does now. But a fair point about future money for sure

The point was more about his expiring deal, also we have enough offense on our blue line without rielly

If the Rangers window was closing, this deal would make sense. One last swing for the fences. But to pull it off now while the they have a young group of cheap D (that are excelling) is just a mismanagement of assets.
Fox already brings the bulk of the Offense for the Rangers D. At least 1 of Lundkvist or Zac Jones are expected to do the same in the immediate future.
On top of the fact that Fox will be coming off his ELC soon, and the Front Office will be looking to give him a hefty extension.
With him and Trouba (unfortunately) on the books, not going to add another sizable Contract for Reilly that isn't needed (if an extension were in place).

If Trouba wasn't on the roster, I'd give it a yes. But we just can't afford another huge contract and we already have 3 right defencemen set in place for next season.
I am okay with trading Rielly. But not letting Hyman go.
I don’t think the Rangers do this without an extension included though.
Yea this. Rielly trade would need to make sense unless sandin can fill his spot next year which is... Yikes. Not resigning Hyman will be silly. Also feel lilypad could get in lineup next year

Trouba can stick around for a bit (He can't really get moved and he's been good).
Schneider will take over for someone or maybe get dealt.
