I doubt kase would sign a three year deal that cheap. 1x1 suits him better.

Why would Seattle take Skjei over the chance at early negotations with Hamilton?

Because they can negotiate before the draft, Caniac. Hamilton is likely staying, so picking him would be a waste of an expansion pick.

      Maybe a Verhaeghe-style 2x1.5?

Hamilton could then just be taken by Seattle, which then gives them the chance to sign one of the best defensemen in the NHL. Not protecting Hamilton would be a comical mistake

You think that Francis would pick him if he knew he wasn't going to sign him during that exclusive negotiating period? Come on...you think he's getting more than what Pietrangelo got? That's the only way that Hamilton is IMO leaving Carolina.

Yes, he is better than Pietrangelo. He's one of the premier OFD in the NHL, and Francis knows that he's a corner stone piece if you can sign him, or trade him if you know he's not going to sign for a draft pick. There's no reason for Francis to not take him if he's there so not protecting one of the bets defenseman in the NHL is a comical mistake.

"Better than Pietrangelo", at least to most NHL GMs, isn't a mainstream opinion. I don't disagree with the premise that you're making, I'm just saying that the high end of Hamilton's extension price is likely Pietrangelo, not, say, Doughty or Karlsson. And don't you think that the colossal mistake would be Francis taking Hamilton when he knew that Hamilton wanted to stay in Carolina? Make a mistake like that, and he may resort to acquiring Skjei for a draft pick. Yeah, I think that selecting Skjei outright is the better choice for Francis.

Hamilton will likely make more than what Pietrangelo does, probably closer to the cap hit of PK Subban, or around half a mil more. He is 100% better than Pietrangelo because Pietrangelo has struggled since leaving the St Louis Blues. Hamilton has had this kind of success in multiple organisations.

Pietrangelo hasn't struggled since coming back from injury. What Knights games have you been watching? He's looked really good this past month...

Uhh... maybe look at his underlying numbers where he's been below average across the board?

His bad start to the year distorts his numbers some. You also have to account for zone starts in those possession numbers, where (relative to the team), he's had a higher percentage of defensive zone starts than any defenseman on the team outside of Martinez. Because of Theodore's presence on the PP, he's also used way less on the PP than in St. Louis to juice his offensive numbers.

I don’t know, i feel like he just has so much to prove. He should take a one year deal.

Even strength metrics aren't affected by his PP time. His zone entries are accounted for when calculating GAR, he's just not been good.
