Hard pass on that Flames trade. Rather keep Jake if that is what we have to take back.

It's about improving the mix. Backstrom solidifies the 3rd line and the Flyers can play a heavier game. The Flyers are a talented group but they need to be harder to play against.

I agree with you that they need to be harder to play against but this is basically selling Voracek for absolutely nothing. You don't give away a player of his caliber for nothing.

Again, I like the idea of Patrick to the Leafs, but a second seems a little steep considering his injury issues

You're undervaluing Backlund in this deal. I don't believe the Flames would trade Backlund even up for Voracek but they likely would to move from Lucic as well. With the rise of Farabee and Konecny Voracek's need on this team has diminished. They don't need an $8 million dollar soft playing 3rd liner. The higher salary would be better distributed solidifying the bottom 6. Making them stronger and tougher to play against. This also opens up more space for the young skill players in the bottom 6. Backlund is also capable of producing quality defensive minutes with 40 to 50 points a season.

Leafs are depending on Liljegren next season, as they might lose two of current top 6 Dmen. Leafs have lots of forwards, and really the current edition Patrick doesn't add much.

Voracek is the 11th highest scoring RWer in the NHL...not a 3rd liner and definitely worth more than a 3C and cap dump.

He has throughout his career shown an effectiveness at putting up points without ever actually asserting any real control over the game. He's a nice player to have but is not a make or break player. The book is out on him at this point in his career. JVR is mostly the same. Neither is particularly clutch. Crying a shame that 11th highest scoring RW be traded for a productive 3rd line NHL center that makes impactful plays, puts up points, and changes momentum is quite bizarre. A strong third center will be more important to the youthful changeover the Flyers are having on the wings. Centers are also historically more valuable than a winger. I may feel differently if Voracek showed any willingness to be bullish to maintain puck possession and assert himself like he had earlier in his career. Once again he seems content to be a passenger on a train that is derailing and like before seems perfectly content not feeling personally accountable for it.

Interesting take seeing as he is in the + when it comes to puck possession

He must have the puck a lot in cringe time when the team is down 9-0 or 6-1. He and Giroux did a lot of high effort defense getting outworked by Washington's 4th line the other night too in their own end. Legitimately just cycled around on not just quick counter attack goals.

I've said he is not a game breaker. The Flyers have $23+ million tied up in 3 players who are not elite level game breakers. They either no longer are or never were in some cases.
