I don't know why so many are so high on Danault. He looks like he's plateaued and will likely only be a 40pt a year guy, which has it's value, but not at the price and term people have been throwing around for him on here.

So the plan is to block newhook to making the jump to 2C? Or do we really want to have a 4-5 years of a 3C with that danualt contract.

This doesnt make a lot of long term sense to me. Especially that contract, that is ROUGH in a flat cap era for a non core player.

You have no idea if Newhook is a 2C, or even an NHL player.

Iafallo justed signed 4x4 (26pts on the season. Laughton signed 3x5 (17 points this season) Danault has 21 points....defensive metrics are one thing but hes not getting close to 2m dollars more bc hes good defensively compared to the recent UFA signings of similar point production

He should have taken that montreal deal at the time, hes not getting anything near that in UFA now

I'm not trolling. You are making roster decisions 4 years from now based on a player with 1 AHL game. What if he's Tyson Jost 2.0?

so if hes Jost 2.0... an NHLer player who is elite defensively and a PK specialist? Are you trying to say Jost is a bust by tryign to use that label 2.0.

This is passive aggressive comments my man. What if Cozens and Jack Quinn are Mittelstadt 2.0? You would say the same thing that im saying now.

Well, mittelstadt and cozens are both in the NHL and both playing well. Quinn has a bakers dozen ahl games but you don't hear me saying the sabres shouldn't trade for a right winger because jack Quinn might be good. You also don't hear me saying to move reinhart back to wing because we have those guys

      No. I think you did.

You are trying to look at the roster 4 years from now assuming newhook is great.

I'm sure your GM doesn't make those assumptions while in a cup window.

nah man, you missed the point.

You used Jost 2.0 as a label of being negative yet in reality Mittelstadt and cozens are no better than Jost in the NHL right now. So if Jost 2.0 is a bust then how is Mittelstadt and Cozens playing well in comparison being a positive.

That is the point, you came off as trolling by saying Jost 2.0 as in being a bust or as a negative thing

You said signing a 2C blocks newhook, assuming that he is an obvious 2C. I asked what if hes not a 2C, what if hes Jost?

He has played 1 AHL game. You have no idea what he will be. Your team has a cup window now. Don't plan around what he MIGHT be.

You brought up cozens and mittelstadt not me and they have nothing to do with the point that I made

BTW, drafting jost didny stop the Kadri trade did it

I said it blocks him down the line, and he is projected to be a 2C at the NHL level, if you dont believe that one of the top prosepcts into the entire NHL cant play 2C then what is the point of draft and developing players, just trade them

And Jost never was projected to be a 2C at the NHL level.

No point in getting into a circle semantics argument about this with you. You came in hot this morning with some passive aggressive negative comments and its not worth my time to continue this

You may be right regarding his contract. I was just making an AGM with a contract for Danault that is realistic to getting him. He'd probably prefer to go somewhere where he's guaranteed to be a top 6 C long-term, so it would probably take a little overpay in UFA to get him. Lot's of GM's would love to add a C like him to their roster in UFA.

I don't think Danault necessarily blocks Newhook. As long as Danault gets paid I don't see why he'd have an issue with potentially moving down to 3C on an elite team. It'll probably come down to money more than position.

It's unlikely that he busts, but it's fair to say that it's no guarantee that he'll be a top 6 C within 12 months when Kadri moves on. Danault would be nice insurance for sure, and could slide into 3C if and when Newhook takes over 2C. And until 2023 with Mackinnon and Newhook on a combined $7.3m it's certainly feasible to overpay a little bit on another top 9 C.

he's a good player but im not sure he's the player i thought he was. he's hard to peg as he was a late developer and only has a couple decent seasons under his belt. i'd take him on colorado but it would have to be either a short term deal or a team friendly deal.

while i don't think newhook is jost 2.0 i agree with your point. avs are in their prime now and shouldn't be passing on roster decisions that make the team better now because a prospect might fill a role 3-4 years down the line.

its just a massive overpayment in UFA for no reason when the Avs have a perfectly fine 2C in kadri who fits the timelines of newhook. I dont see the rationale of making an expensive log jam for no reason.

If newhook is everything hes suppose to be....you have MacKinnon new contract, Danault over payment and then Newhook coming off his ELC all at the same time.

That is just bad cap management with the danult contract being an anchor for a 3C. If you dont want Kadri as the 2C anymore, thats fine but you dont go out of your way to over pay in UFA with aav and term in order to do so
