Description
Can someone explain to me why Boston would give up picks for Reilly rather than claim one of the players off waivers who are arguably better with more upside?

Reilly has never played a full season, yes he has been doing decent on Ottawa this season. But there is significantly more value in claiming Mete or Vatenen off waivers. Mete is only 22 years pld with significant upside, and Vatenen was a pretty top 4 defenseman for some time in Anaheim. Either way I would rather options like that rather than giving up assets for marginal moves that don't really make the team all that better.

Very true
Vatanen is a shell of his former self.
Been very inconsistent this year
And quite soft

Mete and Vatanen suck, that’s why.

Reilly has played 70 games in OTT in 2 years. Has 31 points. How many 30 point d men does Boston have?

If Mete was any good Montreal would not have brought in half dozen mediocre d men to play ahead of him the last 2 years. They finally realized he’s nothing more than a roster filler. Rest of the league fan bases should follow suit.

Reilly may be marginally better than Vantanen but is it a game breaking difference? Vatanen could have been had for free, which I feel everyone can agree the Bruins need all the picks they can get to replenish a depleted farm system, and with Mete on waivers they could at least wait to see if he get claims at this point he hasn't been claimed yet. Chances are Ottawa may end up claiming, in which case they could have had to put Reilly on waivers.

The point for me is that Boston has been horrible with their asset management over the years, and there is really no point in trading picks for depth players at this point. The bruins depth has clearly been tested and they have plenty of it. They have been plagued by injuries for the majority of this season.

First off, Reilly is outplaying and outscoring both of them. Bruins have low waiver claim priority, so Mete was no guarantee to get. Also, Reilly is a little more well rounded, hes a bigger body than the others. More experience then Mete, and younger legs than Vatanen at this point. Also at 1.5 mil cap (Vatanan 4.5 mil) it gives the B's a solid player and room to continue to add

Mete has been garbage for a couple seasons now and Vatanen isn't what he used to be, might be best suited for a 7th man role (is also right handed). Reilly is having a career year and performing well which suits Boston because they're trying to win now and Mete developing more wouldn't do that and a regressing Vatanen wouldn't either. Bruins probably wanted a left shot over a right shot so they went with Reilly. Smart move actually

Reilly has never played a full season anywhere. Mete played on the top pair in Montreal as an 19 year old and clearly was way to young to be put in that position. Mike Reilly is merely a depth defenseman for the bruins and they could have filled the same hole without having to give up any assets.

Well Vatanen has 6 points, Reilly has 19. I know offense isnt everything but it is worth noting. The big difference is Vatanen at 4.5 mil limits the bruins ability to continue to add before tomorrow. Reilly at 1.5 gives them more flexibility. Also, I think Reilly is a better fit, the B's already have a smaller statured puck mover, and do not need to add a lesser one at a more expensive number. Also no guarantee you get Mete... not sure if BOS wanted to wait til tomorrow to find out either. Couldve been left empty handed or overpaying for someone because you didnt pull the trigger when you had the chance.

And he sucked. They tried it was because their LD was horrible. And he still wasn’t an improvement. He never was a big prospect, they were just desperate.

I’d rather have Reilly than Vatanen and Mete combined. Mete is pretty likely claimed by someone before it gets to Boston and Vatanen should probably be playing in the KHL.

Vatanen is a 2M cap hit.

and the bruins have one smaller statured puck mover in their lineup (Grez). their biggest issue is getting hemmed in their own zone without having good first pass breakouts.

The point isn't that Reilly has clearly gotten off to a good season in Ottawa its that the Bruins clearly had other options to fill the same role, they've struck out on other omre meaningful options as they do every year and then go out and waste assets where it is completely unnecessary.

My bad was thinking about his last deal. No guarantee you get Mete, good chance the B's dont. Also, BOS has played NJD numerous times this year, i think they would know if Vatanen was worth it. Id rather see them go and get the guy they want, then run the risk on a waiver claim for a guy that just fits the position need. I think they made the right move, but obviously we disagree which is fine.

Achan and Tinordi lead the d in minutes tonight. Zboril is so bad he was last in minutes on a patchwork unit. Lauzon is a 3rd pair d man masquerading as a top 4 guy. Sadly i could make a case that Reilly is the best LHD man on the roster.

They have not missed out on anyone. There is not much for D available.

Reading all the Boston’s fan praising Reilly amazes me.

A can't wait to read all your whining when your hype will get crushed by reality.

Has anyone ever seen him play?!?! Beeing top 4 in Ottawa doesn't change the fact he's a 7th Dman on any respectable team...

You got robbed. And the picks isn't even for this year.

As the bruins have 4 of their 6 season opening players out injured for tonight's game I wouldn't start comparing tonights game to analyze the bruins defense. Especially considering they have a top 5 GAA in the league. With Zboril having the most games played among all bruins dmen this season and Lauzon is 3rd. They've had 12 different dmen play this year and still have a playoff spot in the toughest division which is a pretty good indicator of their depth.

The point is that the comparables that have been moved so far are Montour, Merril and Nemeth and now Reilly. In my opinion (based on more then points) Reilly is the worst of the three. and he was traded for the highest price (3rd round pick).

If Ottawa never traded Reilly to claim Mete they would have had to put Reilly or Gudbranson on waivers, or take the young guys they've been trying out of the lineup. Point is they shouldn't have had to give up a 3rd for Reilly. Either way made up for it with the Hall deal, hopefully gives them some secondary scoring.

That’s a big hope. Won’t hold my breath. But for the cost it was worth the risk.
