And now we've compounded this idiocy by trading Hakanpaa for Seattle-fodder Fleury. Why can't we handle defensemen properly?

It was not one of those late deadline day deals that commanded attention. But it was a transaction that makes it harder for the Kraken to figure out who might be available from in Anaheim. The Ducks are currently in a position to protect eight skaters, which means they must choose among Fleury, Cam Fowler, Hampus Lindholm, Josh Manson and Kevin Shattenkirk. Fowler, Lindholm and Manson would likely receive protection, which leaves Fleury and Shattenkirk battling for the last spot. There are no guarantees the Ducks would automatically protect Fleury. But there is enough in place to suggest why they would expose Shattenkirk. It starts with the fact Fleury is both cheaper and younger. Plus, the Ducks could decide that the rise of prospect Jamie Drysdale is enough for them to feel comfortable exposing the 32-year-old Shattenkirk and his $3.9 million cap hit to see if the Kraken would bite.
