But a quality rental for a playoff run should equate to a high (1-2) round pick, which is probably what DeBrusk would get, so by the transitive property, Hoffman=DeBrusk

Right but he’s not a prospect anymore. He’s a struggling high end middle six winger with a scoring touch and some bite to his game. He’s worth far more than a first. You hope you get a first for a guy like Hoffman who then becomes a guy like debrusk. Your skipping the hardest step, which is finding that guy in the draft and developing him.

I’m not sure DeBrusk is worth “far more than a first”. He’s a good player for sure, but he’s not a bonafide top 6 forward. He looks like he has the tools to be one, but not yet. This is probably why there are so many DeBrusk-Dunn deals proposed, they’re at very similar stages.
