Interesting from Seravalli: DET got a 4th for retaining almost identical money that Toronto retained last year on Lehner's deal to get a 5th. So the price has basically gone up 1 round in a year
CBJ trades David Savard (50% retained) for 1st+3rd
DET trades Brian Lashoff and takes 25% of Savard's cap hit for a 4th
TBL trades 1st+3rd+4th for Savard (75% retained) + Lashoff

Sources say that at this rate it will cost a 1st in 2024.
This is a smart move by Detroit and one that we will see become more and more common as the cap remains flat. Taking on retention for a future is good business.
Savard is a decent defenseman who will definitely help solidify their blueline for the playoffs. Definitely worth losing picks for if it gets them that much farther.
JBB Finally knows how to trade without overpaying, *Check notes* Wait they trade a 4th for Lashoff... At least we got 25% of Savard Contract
Everyone here vote Detroit to win because they got a 4th for nothing
They got a fourth for spending $300-400k. (The red Wings ate a 1/4 of whatever is left of savards salary. He was owed $4 mil this year. I suspect about 30-40% of salary is still left)
The leafs got a 5th last year for doing the same for Lehner in the Chicago Vegas trade.
It is required to include a player in the deals (I believe leafs traded dzierkals last year).

I forgot Toronto was involved in the Lehner deal lol.

I laugh every time as they were buyers and near the cap. But I guess Dubas realized he was done and figured he could grab a pick off of mlse's pockets. Lol

Tampa is crushed against the cap and Toronto really wasn't. Circumstances are different enough to warrant a 32 place jump.
I'm undecided on this deal for Tampa Bay. Columbus and Detroit both win, though, IMO. The Wings get a 4th for an AHL upcoming UFA and taking some cap that'll be gone after this season. CBJ gets a great return for a rental.

Expect more of these in near future.
then again David Savard contract only ends after this season so they lost nothing (unless you count Lashoff)
