Why would they give up a 1st rounder? they are getting a 26 year old who really isn't that good for james neal who could be a boom or bust but carter savoie a 19 year old prospect AND a 1st??? Carter had 20 points in 24 games for Denver which is pretty good for the NCAA but they only save 4.675 million for 3 years to only get up to 6.978 unless they going huge on a trade or for free agency this would be way to much maybe get rid of carter and the first and throw in a 3rd or 4th and maybe its even but as of right now im pretty sure it would be a huge loss for the oilers...

Neal is on the taxi squad . Hes a bust at this point there is no boom. I just threw in. Brome like that could habe easily been futures and been nothing

If edmonton wants to trade neal and get almost 5 mill cap space x2 yrs to try and improve their team while mcdavid is still there theyll have to pay up to get rid of that contract plain and simple

Agreed. The need to shed that Neal contract to get some more skill to play with MCD and Draisaitl, or another D man, or a goalie. With a flat cap for the foreseeable future, there's not many teams in a position to do this, and Stevey Y sure isn't gonna do Holland any favors.....

Edmonton could buyout Neal and barely have to pay that. They're high on Savoie AND you want them to include a first, when they could be doing so for let's say Taylor Hall?

You're a Detroit fan, but this is hella one-sided dude.

They can buy him out though and it'll only cost around a million a year. Why would they trade a prospect they're high on and a first which they'd rather use for a much better rental.

It's called a buyout. Sure it extends what they'd have to pay Neal, but the cap hit will be much less. They have another D man named Klefbom, a perfect top four guy who'll hopefully be ready next season.

Could be doing what using the assets for taylor hall? Then do it , wont solve your james neal problem ... you want to buy him out go for it , youll just have a cap hit of 4 years but it is what it is . Like i said nobodies doing you any favors and taking that contract for a mediocre return

Great lmao... you still don't acknowledge the fact that this trade is terrible for Edmonton and a huge overpayment.

I'd rather that first go for the rental of Taylor Hall than for it to go to moving Neal's contract. Again, the dude would make 2 million for an extra 4 years. Definitely better than 5 million for 2 years.

You're telling me to buy him out like it's my decision lmao. Buying him out is literally the best option, as they wouldn't be trading a first and wouldn't have to give up a prospec they're high on.

they can't afford to buy him out and add talent. They have 25 mil in cap space next year. They want to resign RNH (6 mil or higher), they need a better goalie (4 mil). Barrie has fit in well there, and he'll be another 5 if they resign him. They need to fill 10 spots on the roster. The 3 pre mentioned will take up around 15 mil combined. so you need to fill 7 spots for 10 mil and if you buy out Neal, you lose that limited flexibility. it's not rocket science. You need to pay someone in picks and talent to get rid of your cap headaches.

Neal's cap next season: 5.75m

Neal's cap next season with a buyout: 1.9m.

What the hell are you talking about?

5.75m for 2 years is a lot more handicapping than 1.9m for four year though lmao.

Instead of giving away picks, which never work well for any team, how about you cope with 1.9m, which is nothing lol.

Try telling that to Leaf fans that have been dealing with Kessel's 1.2 for the last (what feels like) 3 decades...

Every dollar counts during the flat cap era. The oil need to surround McD with more talent, or he's walking at the end of his deal at the ripe old age of 29.

They've done well enough drafting and McDavid is a literal reason for players wanting to play in Edmonton. Yeah, paying a player that doesn't play for you is annoying, but that 1.2m isn't why they're in cap hell. That's based on their dumb decisions to pay their players far too much. Namely Tavares. 2 million over 4 years won't cripple this team.

Agreed. I hate the Tavares contract, and was against the signing. But McD is not an easy player to play with.....he's too fast and thinks too fast. Only a handful of players can actually keep up with him on both aspects. And the players that can will cost a lot of $$$. They don't have the supporting cast to get far. They need to deepen the team, and that means paying someone now to clear as much cap crap as possible.
I never said that they were in cap hell because of Kessel. It just adds to the issues that snowball because of it. It could be the diff between signing Hyman at $5-6 or losing him to another team. And he's a guy that no team can afford to lose.

Have you seen the cap hell they've been in for the past few years?

Lucic, at the time a solid top six player, literally said McDavid was a big reason he signed there.

Barrie, a top 5 scorer for defensemen, took a paycut to play in Edmonton for a season.

Don't be a ****.
