Why are the Leafs allowing Seattle to take Holl?

Cgy can't take that, first Lindholm value is higher than that and second they need more RH forward they can't do that.

They have to protect Muzzin and Brodie and I would assume they protect Rielly over Holl...

I don't think they have to protect either Muzzin or Brodie (Lebrun, I believe, clarified that NMC's have to carry through the following season as well to require protection), but that's besides the point. Makes more sense for the Leafs, as they stand right now, to go 4-4-1.

Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander (Mikheyev exempt, Hyman UFA, Kerfoot expendable)

      Rielly, Brodie, Muzzin, Holl

Then they lose Hyman for sure if they go 4-4-1. I think they will lose him anyways due to cap constraints but I was going off the hockey news' Seattle mock where they take Holl.
That part about the NMC is interesting... I hadn't heard that before...

Hyman's a UFA. They can agree to a contract extension and wait until after the ED to put pen to paper.

Seattle also gets extra time to offer him more money before and after the expansion draft. Just like Vegas did. Don't get me wrong, I understand your point but it's not a sure thing.

Yeah, they get the opportunity to speak with him, but it's not like they can just pluck him from the Leafs, no questions asked, like they could with a player under contract; Hyman has to want to go there. I'm fairly confident that if the Leafs and Hyman settle on a number beforehand, he's not going to Seattle.

      Vegas declines

      1. They can’t afford it, even at half retained. They literally just played 5D last night because they have minimal cap space

      2. They won’t give up Korczak, who is a top 3-4 prospect for them, for Montour.

They are not going to protect a ufa in the expansion draft. Hyman will not be protected because he’s not being resigned mid season.
