Description
I just watched a short take of Overdrive on TSN, and Jeff O'Neil made a very good point in the Leaf's defense core, stating that they need something along the lines of a Luke Schenn, or Tampa Bay type of defense system. What he meant was, the Leafs should get guys that can give you 8-12 minutes a night that can bang bodies and throw weight around, slowing down the offence on the other team, giving your scorers a better opportunity to attack. Tampa had a similar system to this last year, with Bogosian and Schenn rotating them during the play to add more physical presence on the ice. Goals are hard to come by in the playoffs and you cant rely a whole lot on your scorers to get the job done, which is what Jeff O'Neil also pointed out and I tend to agree. So, having Mike Rielly and Nikita Zadorov man the 3rd pair and rotate the likes of Dermott and Bogosian would be a scary scene for the opposing teams, and can give the leafs some insurance on the back end incase Muzzin or Brodie goes down with an injury; and like the forwards, having Robertson, Galchenyuk and Barabonov there can give the leafs some insurance on the forefront if one of the older guys in Thornton or Spezza goes down, or someone further up in your lineup goes down with injury.
I also have Miles Wood from NJ here too because he is like a pesty player similar to Blake Coleman (who was traded from NJ to TB last year for TB cup run) and IMO, he would gel nicely in the middle six for the leafs. I also got Alex Iafallo, just because the leafs had some cap room, and if they still want to pursue a scoring winger, then Iafallo would probably be one of the best choices out there in terms of salary retention.

Except the stars in Tampa carried the team to the cup. It wasn't Bogosian or Schenn leading the team. It was Point, Kucherov and Hedman doing the heavy lifting.

For TO their success will be wherever Matthews, Marner, Nylander and JT take them.

Apart from Iafallo, and maybe Zadorov, I think these are either gross overpays lateral moves or downright backwards moves. Rielly is a 7th defenceman at best. Dermott is better as is Bogosian. Add a 7th d sure, but changing the 3rd pair and 2 forwards with a handful of games left isn't wise. The incoming guys have to quarantine and then need to learn a new system. No telling how they'd fit in. It took Gally a while to get comfortable and now he looks good, what if it takes a month for these guys to get comfortable as well?

Hallander is a prospect LA would be interested in, but the deal after that needs to be picks, not more contracts. Kings are at 49/50 signed contracts currently, so this deal doesn't work for them. Change Scott and Kral (who do literally nothing to move the needle for LA, anyway) to the 2022 2nd round pick, and I think there's a deal to be made here. Kings would also rather have the just the 2022 1st instead of Hallander + 2nd.

Price looks about right on Wood.
Especially if Abramov is any good.
Not sure he will be sold, however.

Too much going to NJD and CHI. Zadorov is a rental for two months, so the Leafs wouldn't wanna dish a second for a guy to play 12 minutes a nights. NJD is fleecing the Leafs with this deal.

That's the adequate price for a guy you can resign in three months. What is Mike Rielly gonna do between today and May11 for Ottawa? Play your young defence man and continue to develop Artem Zub because he is a hidden gem.

So your saying Mike Rielly, who got 17 assists in 37 games for a last-place Senators squad, is a 7th defenseman at best? If I'm correct, I think he'd be tied with Muzzin for 2nd in scoring among defenseman. If any year that gives the leafs a better chance at going deep in the playoffs, you got to go all in. Never mind your prospect pool at this point unless its Robertson, Sandin or Amirov. The time is now to go all in and try to get the cup. Yeah, maybe all these players walk in the offseason, but A) your getting cap room, B) Robertson and Sandin are close to being ready to make the jump so you wont have to worry about filling multiple gaps in your lineup next year, and C) that extra cap can get you better depth pieces in the offseason, and much more flexibility.

Also, what happens if Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Rielly, or even Nylander goes down with an injury, who do you got to replace those guys in a mid-playoff run? You can't rely solely on your top players. You need players that can add depth to your lineup and take the heavyweight off of their shoulders. If the leafs stars end up staying healthy, then that's great, but you have to take into consideration who got as a backup replacement if one or more goes down.

Definitely no recency bias here at all. Rielly is 27 years old and has bounced around the league before having 17 assists on a last place team. It doesn't mean anything. Dermott is a top 6 player on a much better team. End of debate
