Pierre LeBrun on Leafs

Créé par: NazemKadri43

Description
LeBrun on DFO podcast says most of the moves the Leafs have made is to add sand-paper and grit to the line up. PL feels they will dip into that bucket one more time, names Scott Laughton as a potential add, he will be UFA and he shouldn't come at a high cost.

Yup, I would love him on the Leafs. Anyone who plays his type of game and Scott Laughton could make the Leafs more well rounded

Seems like Toronto's #1 deadline priority should be goaltending. Campbell is playing exceptionally well, but his health is questionable. If Anderson and Campbell both go down and Hutchinson is the only option, the Leafs are looking at another early playoff exit.

With Mrazek finally healthy and playing lights out in Carolina, it seems like James Reimer would be a solid option.

Maybe in a perfect world. But the Leafs won't have the capspace to carry 3 goalies, and it's pretty unlikely they toss away Freddy at this point. It's certainly a risk considering their injuries this year, but Leafs really have enough space to pull off one impact move, and Top 9 fwd has been the need all year.

I would guess Laughton is pretty high on Leafs wishlist if Flyers decide to sell.

Seems like Reimer with 50% retention and deadline pro-rated salary wouldn't carry a significant cap hit. Like $425k. According to their team page, Toronto has $831k of deadline space to work with.

Hutchinson hasn't exactly played against tough opponents. Not a single start against Montreal or Winnipeg.

I agree they'd be fine with Campbell and Andersen, assuming they're healthy. However, both of them are struggling with injury issues of late, so that's far from a certainty.

I'd be very worried if I had to go up against the likes of Winnipeg with Michael Hutchinson as the starting goaltender.

I'm worried about Winnipeg with any goalie in net, the list of goalies available (that haven't had injuries this season) that make me less worried doesn't exist

Sure, but if you had a solid goaltender, that would be one less (very important) thing to worry about. You can steal a playoff series if you have quality goaltending. You can still win a series if you have average goaltending. If you have poor goaltending, you're not winning a series against anyone.

Sounds great. The actual conversation telling Freddy he's now the 3rd string goalie, doesn't sound quite as great.

I know this sort of thing is probably blown up a bit too much by fans, but considering Matthews is Freddy's best friend on the team, I can't imagine having a miserable Freddy buzzing around the team would do much for team moral behind the scenes.

Freddy wouldn't be the 3rd string goalie. He'd be the starter (or backup to Campbell if Campbell has done enough to steal the starting job away). Reimer would be there to fill in if both are injured.

I don't know. I can't think of a Reimer level goalie being acquired to be a 3rd stringer.

And I really can't think of a Reimer level goalie being acquired to be a 3rd stringer by a team that is almost right against the cap (they have not carried more than 21 skaters all year) that is looking to add a legit top 6/9 fwd to their group.

But I guess stranger things have happened.

Does Rittich make Andersen a 3rd stringer, or is Rittich the scratch if/when Freddy returns?

Freddy has zero future with the Leafs. Rittich could be re-signed if hes a reliable backup the rest of the way.

Also Freddy can't come back during the regular season unless there is another high salaried injury.

So, I really doubt Fredfy takes 2 months off, then walks back in as starter.

Freddy is 3rd string, barring further injuries.

Likely has played his final game as a Leaf.
