do people not realise in an expandtion draft YOU NEED TO PROTECT EXPIRING UFAs (that are major). examples Hamilton in Carolina, Hyman in Toronto, Hall and Staal in Buffalo, Saad in Colorado, Tatar and Danault in Montreal, Bernier in Detroit, Barrie in Edmonton. Those are just some of the most common and outlandish examples

You can extend them before hand. But Seattle does have a "talking period" 😉 for expiring UFAs that AREMNOT protected

To absolutely guarantee that they don't get taken, yes, you do. However, if you're completely confident that the player will be re-signing with you, then you really don't need to and would be better off using the slot on somebody else.

True but in the examples above at the very least one of them will be taken

That's speculative. It's completely up to the players.

Because they don't have to sign with them.

You don’t have to, Seattle can sign them 48 hours before they draft, but that’s also their draft selection for that team, but if they aren’t selected, there’s a period of time players can be resigned, just like normal.

1-Eric Staal is now with the Habs
2-Some of the players wou mentioned are likely gone : Barrie, Tatar.
3-You can agree to a deal & just make it public after the ED.

you dont need to. SEA would only select them if they were confident that they could sign them before july 1st (or whatever day it is this year). Most UFA rights are only worth mid to late picks anyway so in most cases SEA is better off just taking a player under contract

But its definitely safer for teams to protect them anyway if they want to extend them. Landeskog would be a much better example for COL where I definitely expect him to be protected, but I cant see them protecting Saad as a UFA especially since they may not even end up having cap space to sign him

Yeah but Landeskog was a give so it was TOO obvious. But these are some B+ UFAs that who knows
