agreed he could flop next season like Bobrosky did when he got his 10mill

still created some quality memes so im good

I mean, you can't really compare a 25 Year old Goalie to a 32 year old goalie making 2x as much.

Should have been bridged.
Someone on Canucks they dont want to lose will be happening with the remaining amount of cap left.

Bit too much for a goalie with 60 game experience if you ask me, but for the sake of Nucks I hope he proves me wrong.

Could be a lot worse though.

Quoting: Wqrrior
Benning gets a lot of hate, but he is very competent in regards to RFA signings. This is a very reassuring start to a difficult contractual offseason. Continue to keep him away from July 1st and you have a good GM running this team.

Quoting: A_Habs_fan
Good deal, a bit high of an AAV for now but he’ll quickly be worth it

It's not really what I would call a discount but yeah. Demko will be a stud for VAN. Not a bad contract but not cheap. Love from MTL VAN fans Sticking Out Tongue

Quoting: KingLundqvist30
This is a good deal if he continues to play well, happy for Vancouver.

Quoting: TheNorthStar
This deal has a lot of upside, especially if he plays consistently like the goalie we saw in the playoffs.

Quoting: VijayPatel11
In true capfriendly fashion, demko is going to be bad because the general base here likes his deal, and binnington is going to be insane because the general base here hates his deal

See: Wilson + Skjei deals on the same day

Definitely a steal, figured it was going to be a bit more.... now onto the other 2... Petty and Hughes.

Holy discount! Demko sure took a lot less to help out the team. Now here’s hoping that they use their extra cap space wisely.

Here are some recent comparables:

$5,000,000 x 5 years (age 25) | after 60 NHL games | career 0.911 SV% | 2.90 GAA | Thatcher Demko
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$1,300,000 x 1 years (age 25) | after 60 NHL games | career 0.911 SV% | 2.90 GAA | Linus Ullmark
$1,500,000 x 3 years (age 24) | after 50 NHL games | career 0.924 SV% | 2.40 GAA | Juuse Saros
$1,600,000 x 2 years (age 26) | after 40 NHL games | career 0.928 SV% | 2.30 GAA | Jack Campbell
$2,400,000 x 2 years (age 24) | after 80 NHL games | career 0.913 SV% | 2.80 GAA | Alex Georgiev
$2,800,000 x 3 years (age 24) | after 70 NHL games | career 0.916 SV% | 2.70 GAA | Mack Blackwood

And here's a guy who actually deserved Demko's contract:

$5,000,000 x 5 years (age 25) | after --60 NHL games | career 0.911 SV% | 2.90 GAA | Thatcher Demko
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$5,000,000 x 5 years (age 28) | after 300 NHL games | career 0.919 SV% | 2.70 GAA | Robin Lehner (career totals)
$5,000,000 x 5 years (age 28) | after --80 NHL games | career 0.925 SV% | 2.40 GAA | Robin Lehner (prior 2 years)

Lehner played 5 times more NHL games than Demko has.
Lehner had a FAR better save percentage than Demko has.
Lehner was also a UFA even though he was still quite young.

Pettersson and Hughes are 100% loving this deal, and Benning just lost all his leverage in those negotiations.
And this is just such an unnecessary risk for a goalie with 60 games played, especially for a capped out team.

Holtby wasn't great in WASH last 2 seasons but his career really spiraled after that mask fiasco in VAN. Talk about getting off on the wrong foot. Basically it'll be $9.3M next season for Demo in goal.

So, you’re saying that having to get a new mask commissioned ruined his career?

You realize Holtby’s save percentage is only 0.3% lower than it was last season?

Well they aren’t losing Demko, Hughes, Pettersson, Horvat, Boeser, or Miller. And other than that, there’s no one making over $1.5 million that the Canucks wouldn’t be fine with losing for nothing.

Although it would make sense if you wanted to argue that the Canucks would have to give up pick(s) to make cap space, or they just won’t be able to improve the team at all in the offseason.

When I first heard this deal I thought it was a good deal, but when I checked it out further I saw he only has 62 rs games played.

I won't go so far as to say it's a BAD deal and I SUSPECT it will work out fine, but I do think the nucks should have had more leverage. He's a lot less proven than I realized.

He's had one poor but not bad NHL season and one good but not great NHL season. Both under 30 games. Than essentially one playoff series (which was great but just one playoff series).

This is a very risky contract.

Demko doesn't have the number of games you'd like to see from a goalie before giving 5Mx5. That being said, if he continues to play the way he has been or improves then this is a good contract.

It's true.

You can't really compare a UFA goalie who signed shortly after winning 2 Vezina Trophies ....
to an RFA goalie who signed shortly after his 60th career game with a 0.911 save percentage.

They are both overpaid right now.
That's where the comparison ends.

Good for Demko, get paid now and still get to be UFA when only 30, which is pretty young for a goalie. Then he can make a big money move to a real team, if he keeps up a good performance.

Holtby had 25 Wins last season as the #1 Goalie on one of the top teams. Now, he's warming the bench on a bad team. He has 4 Wins and what must be a career worst .894 save % and a GAA of 3.57, which is far worse than last season. So, yeah, it's safe to say he's spiraled down to insane depths. If you think he's anywhere near the goalie he was last season than you haven't seen him play this season. I'm sure the mask played a role and he clearly never felt welcome in VAN since the first thing they did was shame him into changing his mask.

Is this a discount? or has the AAV dropped now that the flat cap for the next 4 years has been confirmed?

I'm really wondering how you can say that.
He has played 62 games only, that's 1 year of a starter.

It's not impossible that next season that Demko falls off the rails next season.

He had an .897 save percentage last year, and he has an .894 save percentage this year. That’s a negligible difference. And of course he has a higher GAA and fewer wins, because he’s on a worse team that gives up more shots. Holtby isn’t a good goalie right now, but he wasn’t last year either. Sure he played 48 games, but it wasn’t because of merit, it’s because Washington wanted to ease Samsonov in, and they could afford to lose a few games because of Holtby. And attachement to him by the organization might’ve played a part of it.

And your reasoning for why he’s “worse” (even though he’s not) is completely ridiculous. People questioning his mask being cultural appropriation is far from the worst thing that Canucks Twitter can do. He knew what he was getting into when he signed with the Canucks. Holtby wouldn’t have won a Stanley Cup if he let his play be affected by random people on the internet.

This is very very risky. Goalies are voodoo, could be next Gibson, could be next Murray.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Neither Gibson nor Murray have been elite since 2018.

From January 1, 2019 until today, 62 goalies (2 per team essentially) have played at least 28 games. Here are Gibson and Murray's stats in that timeframe and their rank among the 62 goalies.

GAA
Murray: 2.93 (43rd)
Gibson: 3.05 (51st)

Sv%
Murray: .905 (44th)
Gibson: .903 (47th)

These numbers are basically "league average backup" material. They aren't even starter-quality let alone elite. But bottom line is they've performed similarly over the past 2+ years so I'm confused by your apparent juxtaposition of these two men.

Eh I think it's more likely he's just been declining steadily for 2-3 years than anything about a mask.

He was one of the best goalies in the league for about 3-4 years and then declining steadily since

Clark is probably just as important as the netminder himself. One of the best goalie coaches in the game.

I hope so, look at Bobrovsky, succeeded in CBJ with Ian Clarke as his coach, signed for big money in FLA and Clarke came to VAN, now VAN has strong goaltending and Bob is struggling. i bet CGY and FLA will both be coming hard for him! MON maybe too to try re vamp price.

Bob is more likely declining for age. Vancouver's goaltending has been solid the last few years but nowhere near the Vezina levels of Bob in clb
