I'm honestly a bit surprised that it's that high. I think Demko has played pretty well this year, but he's still so inexperienced. I mean, he was putting up pretty pedestrian numbers prior to the bubble last year. That's only 29 games that he's looked like he could be a starter if you combine the bubble + this season. I expected a bridge deal, but given his age (25), maybe they opted for this in case he walked after the bridge.
I mean, I look at Saros and he had two very good seasons (47 games total) as a backup before signing a 3 year deal at $1.5m per year. He's been solid over his last 90 games during that contract, putting up better numbers than Demko too. It's up at the end of the year, and he'll be a 26 year old RFA (just a bit older than Demko) -- but I don't even know if he'll get a contract like Demko just did.
Having said all of that, hopefully it works out for VAN and Demko can prove that he is a legit starter in the NHL.
