CBJ definitely gets the dub on this one. They get a great prospect in Newhook, some depth in Compher, and a late 1st.

COL gets a reliable backup in Merz, a great secondary scorer in Jenner, and a solid middle pair Dman in Savard, but CBJ gets the better out of this one.

I'm not crazy about Compher. Rather keep Jenner. But not a bad trade.

There is no way should the Avs move Newhook for a backup goalie, a depth guy, and a rental, regardless of how good they are in their roles.

Merzlikins is more than a backup. He's a bonafide top 10 or maybe even top 5 goalie on a team like Colorado. That said, you're right that it's probably overkill.

He's good but unless Grubauer is leaving and Frankie is done then it doesn't make sense. If the Avs didn't already have a #1 goalie it might be something to consider, but it's not a huge need.

Agree. It's probably best to simply go after a solid backup like Bernier.

If we're not getting back a number 2C there's not really any point to moving newhook. I think grubes is arguably one of the top 3 goalies in the league right now so it doesn't make much sense to give up our top prospect for a goalie who will be a back up to grubes.

Why would the Avs do this?
