Rethinking the trade value of Taylor Hall

Description
I initially thought that in order to trade for a player of Taylor Hall's calibre by the trade deadline next month, it would cost a late 1st round pick at a bare minimum.

Given the circumstances that the Buffalo Sabres find themselves in right now, I think they should just get the best trade package possible.

If I were a fan of a team like Buffalo, I'm just grateful that someone like Taylor Hall decided to sign with the team in the first place and that he is open to waiving his NMC for the purposes of facilitating a trade before the deadline.

That is in spite of the fact that Hall signed for only one year at a higher cap hit when he didn't have better options anywhere else during the offseason.

When David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period spoke to Sportsnet Radio the other day, he said, "the consensus seems to be that a 2nd round pick, a prospect, and a third asset will end up being the final price for Taylor Hall."

So, what I did was create a couple of trade scenarios of what that might look like, using the New York Islanders and the Florida Panthers as illustrative examples.

The Islanders and the Panthers are two of the teams rumoured to be in on the Taylor Hall sweepstakes, according to the Fourth Period.

The other team is the Edmonton Oilers.

However, I think that if Edmonton reacquired Taylor Hall for anything more than just Adam Larsson, it would look rather embarrassing for the Oilers :/

In any case, this is what I also think is fair value for Taylor Hall.

Enjoy! :D

Agree completely. I'm doing a Buffalo sell-off construction in which I value him at Jake DeBrusk and Boston's 2021 second. (Only because DeBrusk seems to have fallen out of favor with the Boston faithful.)

I would say this offer is better than a lot of offers with a 1st. they should aim for a '22 2nd

Are Bellows and Borgstrom really prospects anymore?
Young players, sure, but not really prospects.

You have to be realistic here... I don't see either team accepting these, especially NYI
This isn't Devils Hall, this is Sabres Hall

They may not be prospects anymore but Bellows and Borgstrom are former first round picks that can play centre like what Nick Merkley was from the last Taylor Hall trade.

They all still have potential to be top 9 forwards in the NHL.

But since they are all coming off their ELCs, the sun is starting to set on their chances of establishing a full-time role in the NHL.

True but playing for the Buffalo Sabres this season has become a low point for Taylor Hall and pretty much every single one of his teammates.

Hall is at rock bottom with the Sabres right now but it is safe to assume that once he's traded to a better team like the Islanders or the Panthers, he'll bounce back.

His performance as a top six forward and his contributions to his new team will reflect that.

Once he's traded to a new team, he'll experience a resurgence as a player in search of a fresh start.

Once he's traded to a new team, I have full confidence when I say he'll look like a better player than what he is today smile

This is just a bunch of "if"s

Truth is, Buffalo has absolutely no leverage to say these kinds of things, since a. Taylor hall has been bad, b. Buffalo has a history of sucking the souls out of players, and c. Taylor Hall seems to be very open to being traded

In reality, Sabres should just try to get anything they can at this point, they can't convince a team to give them more than he is currently worth by saying that he will *probably* improve

Though I agree that he will 99.9% become better if he is traded

I think lots of teams would part with a 1st rd pick depending on retention, I could see COL offering 2021 1st and a couple of prospects like Beaucage and Weiss for Hall with $4M retained. The problem is getting any owner to sign off on eating that much money.
