Most important move of the TDL or offseason

Description
Compher just doesn't have a place in Colorado any longer. He's good enough to thrive elsewhere though, and Chicago would be a really good fit (imo). I know the Hawks are currently in the playoff hunt, but it's highly doubtful they are a true Cup contender this year. As such, I think moving Soderberg for longer term assets makes sense.

Avs will probably overpay due to Compher making about $1M more than he probably should, but the future cap flexibility would be big. Soderberg is also a known commodity and would fit in just fine for a year.

Staal and Haula would be far better options IMO. That and you wouldn't have to overpay.

They would probably need to overpay in any situation where Compher is included due to his salary.

I would be fine with the other options. Those have been done a fair number of times though, so I'm trying something different.

Agreed in needing to pay to get rid of him, but I doubt it's all that likely right now. I think Friedman posted the other day that teams aren't really willing to take on money or term right now. Far more likely that a move happens over the summer. Still think it's possible that Seattle takes a run at him

It has also been said that Chicago is willing to take salary. I would jump on it now (if possible) before that dries up. LOC has been great, and Jost has been fine at 3C. This is also a good move for Compher, as it provides him a nice landing spot. I would feel a little bad sending him to Buffalo, lol.

Shouldn't your most important move be to find a back-up goalie?

There's speculation that Johansson is just a stop-gap and that Francouz will be ready for the playoffs, but yes, it should be the highest priority.

i think right now with the way donny is playing they're going to be taking him over compher in any scenario

I tend to agree. It'll be between him and Graves, but historically, JTC's been decent and he's younger than Donskoi. Perhaps they take a run at him? Wishful thinking? No doubt haha.

I don't think it's possible Seattle goes after him when Donskoi and Graves will definitely available. Now, I could see a possible deal being worked out for Seattle to take JTC (for little to nothing) if it means they select Graves but I wouldn't necessarily do that and I don't see Sakic being the kind of GM to do it. I do think, one way or another, JTC won't be playing for the Avs next season.

That would be a fine outcome for Colorado too. Clearing $3.9m in capspace would greatly improve our chances of resigning Saad. We could also keep our entire D group intact if Graves doesn't get taken, though I suspect that he might get traded anyhow with MacDonald taking his place permanently if we need more capspace.

I think that willingness was to do with salary on expring contracts, not necessarily contracts with extra term.

Anyhow, I do agree that Compher to Chicago seems like a decent fit.

I would think Colorado has more important issues than JT Compher.

Like resigning Landeskog, Makar, maintaining the goalie position, the expansion draft and like 3-4 other decisions.

The money to sign them all is there. Landy will get somewhere near $7, Makar gets whatever he wants, and Grubauer at $5.25-5.5.

What are the other 3-4 decisions? Sign Saad? Sure, if he takes a team-friendly deal.
Expansion draft? Donskoi and Graves are your choices there. EJ will either waive or be bought out, so let's not go down the "you're going to lose Toews" route.
Replacing Calvert and Bellemare? Kaut and Bowers on their ELCs, so good there.

Yeah I agree that's the implication, but in their situation it also makes sense to consider a longer term option. I would do this trade. The cap flex would be huge, and Soderberg provides good depth.

Agreed, but Avs fans are pretty thoroughly disappointed with JTC this year, and considering the signings we face, they (myself included) would like to see him moved out.

No one would argue against that. Keeping Landy, Grubauer and Makar are forgone conclusions. The expansion draft isn't a huge question mark for those of us that have dissected it ad nauseum either.

The main question is whether the team can keep Saad, and that hinges on moving money out (Compher or Donskoi). That's the reason for the title. Obviously you are correct that there is more important stuff though.

Did you read the post you just replied to? The title is partially tongue in cheek but the logic as to why it is also partially true is above.

The hawks have a solid bottom 6. They are looking for a RW2 though but not sure if JTC is the guy, especially since he has 3 years left. I’d said the trade is fair but I’m unsure of the fit. What is the story on Mutala?

I’d pass as a Hawks fan. When the Hawks get healthy the top 9 is going to be crowded, and I don’t really see a spot for Compher there long-term, especially at his cap hit. The Hawks are willing to take on salary for other teams, but it’s going to require an asset to make it worthwhile for the Hawks.

Mutala was a pick I really liked at the time of the draft. He was projected as a potential first round pick but then had a poor year due to serious family issues. He bounced back once those were resolved.

That said, he is pretty much a wild card and probably trending the wrong direction a bit so far this year. Tops out as a middle six guy, but that is far from a certainty. Wouldn't blame you if this wasn't good enough.

Mutala will be more of a 4th liner, but realistically he'll end up as a bottom 6 forward in the AHL. Never really know with prospects though, and he'd be another dart to add to the prospect funnel of a rebuilding team.
