Im gonna be doing this "series" and do one for every team. All moves must have taken place at the 2015 Draft or later. Buffalo is my 4th team

Acquiring jeff skinner wasnt the mistake, signing him to that massive contract was a very brutal mistake. I say jeff skinner's contract is 2nd worst in the entire NHL, not a title anyone likes to have in their resume.

ROR for two cap dumbs and Tage Thompson was worse. Skinner is still a really good player.

ROR trade's the worst. At least Skinner managed 40 goals during his first year in Buffalo.

Nothing BUF got from the ROR trade has been successful in any way whatsoever. One of them became mentally challenged, one of them was hot garbage and one of them has been injured more than healthy. And that first was literally the last one of that said draft, with the player from there still not under contract.

Why omit the 1st and 2nd rounder in that deal?

    Tage 26th overall
    A 1st projected at ~20th
    A 2nd projected at ~50th

Better than the return for Dougie Hmilton

    Everyone wants an opinion here

    Context be damned

I wish we’d see more of this type of trade:
Dougie and Fox for Hanifin and Lindholm

    Some hindsight 2020 vibes there

Not to mention one of the assets of that deal literally hasn't had a chance to be anything lol it's a 2021 2nd round pick and Ryan Johnson isn't even 20 yet

The return for ROR was better than Dougie for BOS

Skinner meanwhile was clearly coming off a PDO year and his prime was likely to end soon and he doesn't do much at all aside from scoring goals

Then signed to max money & term 😳🤯

Ror trade was worse. Honestly i absolutely hated it when it happened, the fact that armstrong got to keep his top 3 prospects (hell, they may have had thompson ranked even lower internally), while giving us every penny plus back in absolutely useless cap dumps, and a first and second. Stl stumbled pretty bad out of the gate, which had some sabres fans like myself thinking "meh, that pick could be pretty alright", then in november, it got leaked that botterill let armstrong top 10 protect the pick. Then of course binnington showed up and put boot to ass for 4 months, and ya know, stanley cup. Of course ror won the conn smythe too. Maybe it is hindsight, but it looked awful when it happened, and it somehow got worse. Tage thompson is awful, and ryan johnson (pick 31) looked ok in the world juniors, but i believe he just scored his first college goal in 62 college games last week. A lot of this is on botterill, who has gotta be the worst former gm in hockey. Skinner was also not his finest hour, he overpaid him by probably 2.5 per on a long term deal. It looks awful now, his career year was 40g 23a- which got him the deal, and with the holes in his game he pretty much needs to do that to every year. Skinner wanted to play here or toronto, toronto did not want him, which makes overpaying him maddening. YOU WERE NEGOTIATING AGAINST YOURSELF BIGHEAD. I get other fans thinking skinner is a worse move, but our gm basically paid another team to take a guy that won them the cup. Would toronto trade sandin and/robertson for a guy that could get them their first banner since before man walked on the moon?

Fine, lemme correct a bit here.

At this very moment it's looking like ROR trade was the worst mistake.

Agree. If you consider that the hole from the ROR trade is what led to the Skinner acquisition a month later and created the cap space for the extension, then it's a no-brainer which one was worse.

And maybe this is piling it on, but I have a hunch that the Blues were in on Skinner before the ROR trade but he wouldnt waive or he wouldn't talk extension with St Louis. I remember Armstrong talking with Skinner's agent on the draft floor. Alternate universe stuff...
