I'm aware they have been lacking forward depth all season. Specifically, I think they have lacked a 3rd line all season. Tanev, Blueger, and Aston-Reese need to be the 4th line for this team to have any chance at a Stanley Cup run IMO. With that said, it has come to a point where they have to do something about it. They were able to be patient before because they were winning. I think this team, when healthy, is a contender. I also don't see them wasting Crosby's last few great seasons. He may not get points like he used to, but he's still a force. The time is now to build this team for a run this year, so who are they going after?
you can keep pissing in the wind and getting it all over yourself, or you can turn the other direction.
This team is too flawed this year. The best move is to hit reset at the end of the season. You got a lot of those 1 year deals kicking off the books, Bjugstad money opens up, Major pieces like Zucker will be back. You also have the possibility of maybe getting what prospect talent they have on the ice as they will be out of juniors.
They got 4 mil in cap next year. The only guys they have to resign are ZAR and Blueger, both RFAs neither one of which has a ton of leverage. They probably get both for 3mil combined.
They can move on Matheson by sending him to seattle. That will open up 4.8 million more in cap, and we can talk about actually doing something about the forward group in FA.
It's a flawed assumption that you have to do something. This is the mistake JR kept making. Just desperately throwing what ever **** he could out there. It led to last years cluster F of guys like PM who had no business on the team.
They are in as good of a position as they ever have been to hit reset. 8.8 million in cap if they move matheson, is a lot of space. Probably end up with almost 5.6 million in cap after ZAR Blueger resign, they can find 2 3rd line players. If they play Poulin it's 5 million to find a center. Pissing away assets now simply isn't the solution.
