Farrance is almost 2 PPG as a defenseman, Thompson is PPG as a forward
You can guess which one a team would rather have
If one were to make a simple assessment based on a handful of games' stats, sure.
But some NHL clubs hire scouts.
Farrance has played 10 games this year (16 pts).
Over the NCAA careers, Farrance has 88 pts in 112 gp (0.79 ppg)
Thompson has 93 pts in 100 gp (0.93 ppg).
And Farrance said last year, when he announced a return for senior season, that he would go to free agency after.
Thompson has not said this (and could return for another year at Providence).
I assure you both are legit NHL prospects and could be in NHL as early as this season.
