Ugh, just stop trying to sell Byron to anybody. No one is taking that ridiculous contract off your hands. Buy him out, that’s the only way you’re getting rid of him.

That Ekholm trade is crazy. First, he's not worth the equivalent of 2x1st rounders AND 2x2nd rounders. In a normal year with normal scouting, he wouldn't be worth more than a 1st rounder.
Then, to go from Kulak to Ekholm is an upgrade for sure, but to pay 4 big "prospect" pieces for it is over the top. Just because Montreal has a lot of prospects doesn't mean we can trade them away for cheap.
Either make it Mysak and a 1st or Poehling and a first, but that's if there's serious competition for him

It's an overpay from MTL, but the bolded part of your statement is inaccurate. Ekholm is easily worth more than just a 1st.

I honestly can't remember the last time a 2nd line dman who doesn't get regular PP time was traded for a 1st round pick.
Maybe if the pick was beyond 25 overall? I don't know, I really can't remember.

Jake Muzzin?

Categorizing Ekholm as a 2nd line dman because NSH plays Josi ahead of him is like categorizing Malkin as a 2nd line center because Crosby plays on the top line. There aren't many other teams where Ekholm wouldn't be their best LD.

Ok, Jake Muzzin is a great example. I don't agree on your valuation though. Teams have gotten burned on overvaluing dmen because their partners play so well. Alzner, for example. Tbh I don't watch enough Preds games to delve deeper, but I think offering more than 2 pieces for the guy is a stretch. On a side note, those prospects the leafs sent to LA seem destined to be AHL lifers. Not to say LA knew this back when, but maybe Toronto knew what they were giving up.

Well those prospects were relatively recent 2nd round picks at the time of that trade, but yeah neither looks like they'll amount to much these days. Even back then I thought TOR was underpaying though. Ekholm's definitely not a guy who's been carried by his partner though. The past couple years have been the opposite - Fabbro's plentiful rookie mistakes have been dragging down Ekholm's good play.

He has a year more left and Nash retain money. That’s why I gave more

Staal probably wants out of dodge but what has to be considered is his 10 team no trade list and I would think the Canadian teams might be on it just due to the 2 week quarantine
