Description
My once a year trade post lul

From watching the leafs over their 27 games the one issue I noticed was the third line just never looked right. While the HEM line has looked ok I feel it could be better. So okay most fans say trade with US teams for so and so. Well okay but that player needs to go through 14 day quarantine and on top of that needs to get back into playing shape. This limits our options to other Canadian teams at the deadline. So if we go down the list the trade partners for us really are between Ottawa and Vancouver as Calgary will be battling for 4th place with Montreal and Edmonton. Vancouver has some options but on limited term. Ottawa however does have some players with term who can work nicely for us. The one player next to Stuzle (not happening) who would work for us is Nick Paul

I remember Ottawa fans discussing a Paul trade to the Leafs. However at the time I thought the price was to high. Yet with the emergence of the HEM line I was thinking maybe the fit is there.

Similar to the HBK line Pittsburgh used for its cup runs I was thinking Paul-Kerfoot-Hyman would be something to see. Paul takes faceoffs, Hyman drives play, and Kerfoot can be chippy at the net. I call it the HPK line ;)

so basically

Thornton-Matthews-Marner
Mikheyev-Tavares-Nylander
Paul-Kerfoot-Hyman
Simmonds-Engvall-Spezza

If not Paul-Engvall-Mikheyev could also work but than Kerfoot would be the 4C which would raise some questions.

Trade based on the Goodrow trade last year can add Hallander if necessary. Some may say overpay but if Paul can replicate what he is doing in Ottawa could be worth the risk.

As a Sens fan, this is the kind of ask I would have when trading Paul, but realistically I don't any GM is making that offer, and i don't think The Sens will trade him.

It's taken a long time, but he's finally turned into the player Ottawa was hoping for when they traded Jason Spezza. He's the kind of player every Coach and GM wants in their Bottom Six. I think he's going to finish his current contract, and then sign another 2-4 year deal in Ottawa. I have a feeling that he'll be Connor Brown once Connor Brown is done in Ottawa.

I understand why Ottawa may want to keep him. The team is young and so it's hard to tell right now which guys will take the next step at the NHL level.

I don't know what the thinking in Ottawa is regarding adding more first and second round picks to the organization but maybe that might be a good way to land a player who can lead the young players into the roles the team needs?

Thoughts?

I don't think Ottawa is really in a position to be landing any more big returns, but that's probably mostly due to them not really having many assets left who could net something big, that they would actually trade. Basically the only potential pieces that would fetch something significant are Chris Tierney and Logan Brown. Brown probably won't be on the team past the Expansion draft, whether he's traded or exposed. Chris Tierney is probably also on a limited clock, as Shane Pinto is about a month out from turning pro, so I would guess Tierney is gone some time between this deadline and next deadline.

As far as your point about getting guys to lead young players, I actually think they already have a good base of that in the lineup. Chabot and Tkachuk are obviously leadership material already, Nick Paul and Connor Brown both receive so much praise in that regard from players and coaches and management, and guys on the team have had really positive things to say about Matt Murray and Evgeni Dadonov. I think they could really use some more of that on the Blueline, in terms of guys who can actually play good hockey. I think they'll make a meaningful addition on the back end this summer. I wouldn't be surprised to see Ian Cole back for his "2nd" stint as an Ottawa Senator.
