Don't have the stats to measure defense. I will tell you this though: McAvoy is better defensively.

But it really doesn't matter to me.
Have you seen this Makar guy? He got almost a point per game (50 in 57) in his ROOKIE SEASON. This year he's as close as you can get to not being a point per game, with 14 in 15. And he's younger than McAvoy, only 22 years old? I take Makar 10 times out of 10.

Okay did you see what i said on the other thread? I gave an explanation for each player. Makars was there.

How has offense only worked in this league? He has holes in his game. Mcavoy doesn’t. Yes, his offensive production is better, significantly. If you put mcavoy on the ice, your team has an advantage in every situation. Can’t say taht about makar. This is why in their primes doughty was always better than Karlsson.

The amount Makar is better at offense outweighs how much better McAvoy is better at defense.

Cale Makar this season:
15 games, 14 points, 1 goal, 13 assists. .93 points per game. Not too shabby. Take away the powerplay? 15 games, 1 goal, 6 assists, 7 points. .46 points per game even strength.
McAvoy this season:
20 games, 3 goals, 12 assists. .75 points per game. Not bad! Take away the powerplay, and lets take a look. 20 games. 3 goals, 7 assists. 10 points. .5 points per game.

Last two seasons at even strength.
Makar: 72 games, 9 goals, 29 assists. Still a really really good. .52 even strength points per game.
McAvoy: 87 games, 7 goals, 32 assists. .46 points per game even strength.

We’re talking probably four assists a season. That’s worth it to you? That’s worth the difference in defensive play. Ya, Makar is way better with the man advantage. Congrats. PP QBs are a dime a dozen. I think either team could go get Barrie for a song right now.

Take the all around guy. Always.

Oh okay, so now the argument is development and the future? Thought we were talking about now. Let’s not shift the goal posts. Also, McAvoy is less than a year older than Makar, so what are we really talking about here. If anything, the experience of four years as a number one d, a stanley cup final run, and two trips to the second round should help mcavoy’s development, no? And to think he’s only like 250 days older than makar. Wild.

Yes, because you made up your mind before the discussion began. Makar was your guy, you saw him score a cool goal one time, you checked out his hockeydb page or something. I don’t know, but defense matters. Would have thought a leafs fan would know that.

At 5 on 5 31 out of 31 NHL Gms would rather have McAvoy on the ice.

Maybe Boston's gm, but most are taking Makar.

Why? His offense is fractionally better. His defensive is vastly inferior.

Just gave you a nice list in that other thread.

Makar
Carlson
Pietro
Hamilton
Jones
Heiskanen

Last 3 are certainly very debatable, but he's at best 4th right now.

Yikes only makar and hamilton have an argument, Jones is dog water, the rest are good but not better than mcavoy

Are you being serious right now? Sure sometimes he's ignorant, but you can't possibly tell me Point is better than the reigning Hart and Art Ross trophy winner, or the reigning Rocket Richard trophy winning (partly anyway).

Scoring a bunch of points and goals won’t get you anywhere if you let up more while your on the ice

It's not just "a bunch of goals and points". It's the top point and goal scorers in the nhl.

Math is not subjective, you cannot tell me someone plays good defense when math says they do not you’re quite simply wrong

Who cares?
He won the Hart. Nothing more needs to be said. The Hart mean you are the most valuable player, all around. You cannot possible tell me that these little stats saying Point is good at defence mean he's better than the reigning league MVP.

Don’t watch hockey then. It’s all on the websites right? All on the stat sheet after all. What’s on the ice doesn’t matter. Better yet, buy an xbox, run a bunch of sims. You’ll get to experience like 25 seasons a year. How easy is that!

Pathetic. This isn’t baseball. Later nerd.

I can tell your a casual fan so I won’t be too hard on you but if you are giving up as many or more goals than you score you are not making an impact so you are not the most valuable player in your team, much less the league, and the hart trophy isn’t even given to the mvp anymore the league has just made it an extension of the art Ross, and they aren’t “little stats” they are complex math equations
