I dont think this team is that far off

Description
Avs have very strong D (when healthy), good goaltending (assuming Francouz can return), and a good top six that will eventually play better than they currently are. The fourth line has also been good, except for the fact they haven't been able to cash in, and the PK is one of the best in the league. Additionally, O'Connor/Sherwood, etc. and Timmins/MacDonald, etc. provide really solid skater depth in the event of injuries. The biggest problems are (1) the third line just won't gel, and (2) they either need Francouz back very soon or a better backup.

Any one of the trades below (and only one) would be big for Colorado (IMO). Basically whoever accepts gets two NHL players at a combined cap hit of around $4.3M. Kaut is a former 1st rounder who needs a team with middle six roster space, and Compher should be a 30-40 point guy in a more favorable situation. Both come in return for an expiring contract and a third (price is negotiable though). Have heard mixed things about Getzlaf waiving, so caveat that one.

I didn't address goalie here because IDK what is up with Francouz. Everything below assumes a healthy roster.

Avs fans: logic is that Kaut is pretty buried here and thus expendable. He provides a nice sweetener for a team to take Compher though. If they can get a lottery ticket back in the form of a mid-round pick, I think that's fine. However, I know a lot of folks have big plans for Kaut, so I expect some won't like this.

Granlund isnt a C, hasnt been one in a long time so if Avs hook up with Nashville for a 3C, thats Haula. Compher is better suited on the wing, so adding Haula and Compher for the 3rd line and let Nuke go back to his role that suites him on the 4th line would by my ideal move set.

We cant count on Calvert staying in the line up, I wish he is fully healthy but I think that wont ever be a think for him

I thought that too but pretty sure he's playing C right now (granted due to injury). Valid points though.

hes taken 100 faceoffs in 20 games at 43.6%....not a C option, he would be the same conversation about Compher....better on the wing
in comparison haula has taken 193 at 58.0%....thats the target

to make it work cap wise, you include Pateryn, he has 1.2m in buried cap hit. thats the cap throw in and toss in whatever low asset for them to take it bc no one takes it for free

Smart and very progressive thinking to acquire all three of Granlund, Staal, and Getzlaf and creating a hybrid of all three of them. GranlundStaalGetzlaf would be pretty unstoppable as a brilliant all-around player.

Haula hasn't exactly done much since that one fluke year in Vegas. Not sure he's the answer.

Granlund didn't play at center at all last season for NSH but did get moved there recently, due to injuries. Hasn't looked out of place there. That being said, I'm not a fan of this for NSH. I don't like Kaut enough to take on Compher's contract and add a pick.

I would've agreed with you last week, but Granlund has been centering Forsberg and Tolvanen over the past 3 games, and that line is looking very, very good. I don't know if that means Granlund can play C long-term, but he's looking pretty good right now at least. I would agree though that it's probably better to go after a full-time center than Granlund if that is the spot you're looking to fill.

      Why not get both?

      Landeskog - Mackinnon - Rantanen
      Burakovsky - Kadri - Saad
      Granlund - Haula - Donskoi
      Nichuskin - Jost - Calvert/Bellemare/Compher/LOC

Nashville are a tire fire apart from in possession metrics which are top 5. They are last in the league high danger chances.

Happy to hear you out on Haula though. Please enlighten me...

You kind of answered the question there...hes looking good centering Forsberg and Tolvanen in the top 6. Hes getting much lesser linemates and isnt playing 19-20mins a night ont he Avs unless its on the wing. He had 10, 7, then finally 21 faceoffs the last 3 games, whatever was going on during the 1st 2n games as mentioned, he wanst taking many draws

I would rather take the guy who is playing the 3c on the regular and has almost 61% Dzone starts in Haula vs the 40% Dzone starts Granlund. Just the role that Avs would need I think Haula makes more sense even though Granlund has the highter offensive upside

I don't know if it's worth it to burn Kaut on a rental. Haula isn't worth him and if granlund is hit and miss at center why just throw away kaut for him. If nashville is on the outside come playoffs those guys will go just to get something back since they are both UFA's so a pick and maybe a B prospect at best. Kaut's ELC will come in handy next year.

so a guy who is playing 3C, getting heavy Dzone starts 61%, and at 58% faceoffs on the season, whats the role of the 3C that you want. Granlund has 2 more points and 6 more shots thatn him on the year but avg 4 mins of ice time a night more than Haula. So whatever Granlund has brought offesnively in the top 6, Haula is doing more with less on the 3rd line

If you think Granlund is a fit as 3c, then haula would be as well, and at basically half the cap hit, Haula is the better option

Is Duchene playing wing then to make room for Granlund at C?

Nope -- the centers right now are Granlund - Johansen - Duchene - Sissons (though Johansen is in Covid protocol right now so Haula played center last game)

Just offering some insight on Granlund over the past few games that you may not have known. He's starting to play some center again, so we'll see how that turns out.

lots of time till the deadline, so lets see how he does 10-12 games back in the position, 3 games is too much of a small sample size.
IMO haula has the same impacts as Granlund as a C but at half the cap hit. Let Leafs buy Granlund at a premium, Avs will grab Haula at a reasonable price bc Sakic and Poille do civil business with one another

I would take on Kaut but not compher.

You won't get Kaut without Compher.

Lol if by "civil business" you mean Sakic taking Poile behind the woodshed for Girard... by all means let them be civil again haha

As much as I'd love to see our Captain getting the Ray Bourque send-off, I don't think it will happen.

      I'm rooting for it, though.

We can certainly use right-handed forwards.

Smart and very progressive thinking to acquire all three of Granlund, Staal, and Getzlaf and creating a hybrid of all three of them. GranlundStaalGetzlaf would be pretty unstoppable as a brilliant all-around player.

      Too bad he's on IR...smile
