There's unfortunately zero guarantee the AHL is going to keep playing as many games. Otherwise I would agree with you. Byram's talent level is high enough to be more cautious about. Usually I'd say let the chips fall where they fall, but you do need to be a little more cautious sending top 5 picks down to the bruiser league. One man's thoughts.

you are over reacting again, and you dont burn a year of his ELC to put him in the AHL (which he is a 19 year old Junior, he wont be allowed to be in the AHL as soon as the WHL season starts up)

Interesting. I like Byram, but have been surprised whenever Team Canada 2022 is discussed, a lot of SN/TSN guys pump his tires to be the next Drew Doughty style 20 year old to make the team. What are they basing this on if as you say he's having some struggles breaking in so far? Like I think he's going to be really good, even steady top 4 pushing top pair by mid next season if he is developed with care, but what the heck is all this talk of him being ready for something like the Olympics by next year?

Its just ups and down of na 19 year old Rookie in the NHL playing top 4 minutes...a few games ago he was the Avs TOI leader of all Dmen playing big minutes and closing out games, the last 2 games have been a bit rockier with some unlucky goals bouncing off him against the Avs.

I was going to say uh idk what the OP is on about. Every young player has their bumps and bruises, but that’s how they learn. Byram is so high level that regardless of his fumbles and bad luck, he’ll stay in the lineup. Every Colorado game I’ve seen, he’s the most noticeable dman. Makar is unreal too, but Byram is really good in his own right. Byram moves the puck so well, his vision is crazy. He skates well too, him and makar are going to be one of the best pairings in the league for the next 10 years if they put and keep them together.

and they are asking Byram to be more of an all situations minute eating Dman, he is sacraficing offence for that role, which is what they need in makars or girards partner. Anyway you look at it, the Avs top 4 is Makar Girard Byram Toews and that is as solid with high end ability as it comes.

Byram has been quite unlucky, I think he has 3 or 4 own goals this season with pucks bouncing off him but that is just positional growing pains of Young Dmen, that gets sorted out with experience .

Like you said Skating and vision...high hockey IQ is something you cant teach or develop in a player, that is what separates them from their peers. Byram already has that, so logging minutes in the AHL doesnt help his devleopment, he is getting the same big minutes in the NHL but just will be doing against much weaker talent in the AHL...half of the teams are full of ECHL guys bc fo the taxi squad, so a half league of the ECHL/AHL talent isnt developing anyone

Agree with everything you said. Byram is going to be a very good two way dman that can eat minutes. His vision and iq are very very high. That will serve him well, he’s had so much bad luck. Like you can’t even blame him for these own goals. Like you said those will disappear with experience.

I don’t know if he’s been good. Overall sure I would agree he’s been alright but recently he has not been. He’s scored more goals on Grubauer than the opposing goalie. May just be bad luck not sure but I would say he is struggling to find a strong overall game in the NHL.

Yeah, I mean besides that he’s bream alright, he has been taken wide a couple times and just out muscled and his age shows. I like his physicality. But my concern is we aren’t winning....

There is an agreement between CHL and NHL where junior-eligible players get returned to CHL team if they don't make NHL team.
Normally, only European teens can play in AHL.
This year they made an exception since WHL, OHL weren't playing....so a lot more 19-year olds in AHL.
But don't know what happens if WHL playing again.

I’m not sure about this. Every time I’ve watched Byram he’s been a smooth-skating, puck moving defenseman. At the age of 19, it’s not easy to be an elite two way defender and he’s shown all the tools to be one.

He's not struggling lol. He had a couple of games where he wasn't at his best and fans over reacted. He was still playing top-4 minutes, as the coaches aren't as emotional as the fans.

He's playing at a 56%CF level... He's fine

Fair enough, I think he's been fantastic when I've watched him. Guess I was just going off claims from one fan here that he is struggling overall. Just wondering where the fairly consistent hype from TSN/Sportsnet is coming from putting him on 2022 projected Olympic teams. Like, even just from Colorado, would you put him on the Canadian team before Girard? I don't see it, but maybe Colorado fans have a different view. And I'm not seeing Girard on many projected teams.

Perhaps just hype for the sake of hype, as the sports networks do. Again, not saying he can't break out in the next year and make it, but it seems like most projections slot him in as 7th/8th dman already. Doughty making it in 2010 was an aberration, not a trend to definitively look out for. He was already playing 25 mins a night at 20 lol.
