Description
2016 Offseason, MTL resign Markov, so doesn’t need to sign Alzner

2018 Draft day, MTL trade Pacioretty vs Tatar Suzuki + 2nd round pick

2018 Draft, MTL draft Tkachuk after losing their LW Max Pacioretty and getting a Center in Nick Suzuki + Ryan Poehling in the pipeline

*** It’s understandable MTL draft Kotkaniemi in 2018 since we didn’t have Suzuki, so I’ll never blame them for drafting Kotkaniemi ***

*** 2016 summer : Drouin vs Sergachev / Alzner instead of Markov / Losing Radulov that pushed Bergevin to do the Drouin trade was the only horrid summer by Marc Bergevin ***

sergy trade hurts. besides that im keeping the center over the winger. KK's still young. he'll be better than tkachuk by the time he's 22-23.

We don’t know for sure
Tkatchuk is the better player right now, and IMO those 2 trades above place MTL in a better position for years to come.

Anyway, Go Habs Go and fire Claude Julien ASAP

Subban was a better player when we traded for weber and look what happened now? weber is good and consistent as ever while subban is a shell of his former self

I can see that case for Matthew (I don't agree with it, but I can see it) but Brady hasn't really shown that. I think you just don't like him and see Gally as "annoying in a bad way" because he's not on your team, which is the whole reason you get a guy like him - skill + gets under the skin of the opposition

I'll focus on the KK selection there because I'm fed up of those hindsight 20/20 posts everywhere but the truth is this;
Center depth in 2017-18:
Roster: Danault, Galchenyuk, Plekanec, Mitchell.
Depth: Drouin still made inconclusive appearances in year 2 at center, Froese played 48 games and DeLaRose played 55 games.
Pipeline worth mentionning: Suzuki came out of a 100 point season in the OHL, Poehling came out of -almost- a PPG season in the NCAA, Ikonen made a slim impact in Liiga, Evans finished his NCAA career with a 46 point season.

Now looking at this you knew by that time that Chucky wasn't a center, had hopes Danault was on his way to a top 6 role, Plekanec was aging and none of the others had top 9 center potential in that line up/depth. The pipeline was looking pretty good with three centers with NHL hopes but none were on their way in the big league soon, Evans needed to work his skating among other things and the two others needed more time to mature. Be true to yourself nobody taught that Suzuki would come in and had that immediate impact in the league, by that time it was believed a year in the OHL plus one year with Bouchard would be the most likely route.

What was said of KK at the time of the draft (And prior);
Craig Button - "He plays the game in a similar fashion to Anze Kopitar and to Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews."
Adam Kimelman - "Kotkaniemi played regular minutes in Liiga and won't turn 18 until July 6. He's used in the middle and on the wing, and kills penalties, which speaks to his high hockey IQ."
Steve Kournianos - "Like his countryman Kupari, Kotkaniemi spent his draft year playing in Finland's top circuit. Only difference is Kotkaniemi significantly out-produced him. He's a mature playmaker with world-class vision, but his first-step quickness at this stage of his development is average."

Who could you blame for picking a guy compared to those guys with heavy words like "World class vision" describing him coming out Liiga as a 18 yo with over half a ppg? Management should've known better and let him develop his awful skating stride and balance in his D+1 year either in Liiga or with Bouchard in Laval even if he was showing great stuff early. I don't agree with some saying that the NHL isn't a development league, there are some aspects that can be worked on in the NHL like awareness, decision making and faceoffs but working on your overall skating technique is too much to ask for a coach at the NHL level.
The only thing we need to do now is not give up like Boston gave up on Seguin, KK is still the 10th youngest player in the league in his D+3 year so let's just keep working with him.

Just want to remind though, that the Canadiens jumped the 'consensus' draft board to take him ahead of a bunch of players ranked higher (including Tkachuk & Zadina, and a bunch of D) by central scouting. Not that they've all turned out either, but the KK pick was controversial on draft Day too.
And the Bruins didn't give up on Seguin, I don't think. They were really tough on cap and a huge number of no-trade clauses at the time - fitting a bigger salary for him was going to be really hard. Hamilton to Calgary was same story.

Seguin's trade obviously had something to do with the cap situation of your team but his poor outings in the playoffs and his off-ice drinking/party habits did contribute to him being the cap casualty.
I wasn't comparing KK to anyone just assessing the "Why" behind the selection to remind annoying people with their "Should've picked this guy" that there's a reasoning behind the selection. He was indeed viewed as somewhat of a reach at third overall but let's not lose sight here, mock drafts and analysts rankings aren't the absolute reality in every war room.

No arguments that it really seemed like immaturity was part of the Bruins not wanting to commit long term to him - but might have not played as well without being traded. We'll never know.

Agree that the draft pundit boards aren't everything, but there is something to it. I think it was a reach to get a centre - but centres are worth more, in general. I thought it was probably a mistake at the time, but Ottawa fans were hand-wringing about Tkachuk over Zadina too...... but they're happy now.

-Very true that the night of the draft the Sens subreddit was pretty funny to look at.
-Also very true that centers comes at a premium and even more on a team looking for years for a number 1 center
