Sounds crazy, but a late round draft pick. That’s it.

Make a case to me for a team actually paying a hefty price for malkin.

It's 2021, Huberneau is the better player on a better contract. Malkin would likely on waive to go to a contender, and virtually all those teams are near the cap, so they would have to return 9m in cap to the Pens which would likely weaken their team.
How's this. If the Leafs feel Malkin is a difference maker for the next 1.5 years....Malkin for Nylander, but Pens would have to retain 3m

Its likely less than most people are thinking. $9.5M is cap space is very hard to fit on your team during covid...combine that with teams looking to contend and acquire a center...thats a very small group of targets.

I think the penguins would have to add multiple first round picks.

I would put Malkin on RW replacing Nylander. Malkin...if he still "has it" would be a great power forward. Tavares, Matthews, Malkin, Hyman,....power forwards with hands...add Marner that's a pretty great top 5. Simmons and Mikeheyvov...also power forwards and speedy Kerfoot, Spezza...top 9.

Gentlemen. This is all really conjecture. The real window to Malkin passed a few years ago. I see this being similar to the Flames waffling on Iginla when it was so clear they were a middling team for the last few years of his tenure.

At age 35, Iggy landed Kenny Agostino (yet to stick), Ben Hanowski (who?), and a 1st.

At the point of that deal, Iggy was still healthy.... where Malkin seems to sepnd time on the IR. When he is not he is still more dynamic - but I said when.

And sure, you are gonna get an extra year on Malkin, where the Pens got Iggy as a rental. I still don't see in today's NHL a team mortgaging THAT MUCH of their future for an aging foward, regardless of who good he maybe be.

Would the Avs move Alex Newhook and a 1st for Malkin? I honestly think no. A first and Shane Bowers? Maybe.

The thought of Malkin landing Huberdeau is laughable. Never going to happen. A 1st and Owen Tippett would be debatable. A 1st and Heponiemi? Maybe.

Don't get me wrong, Malkin is a HOF player. Dynamic, a force. But he is all that when healthy - which over the last few years is less often. He is 34.....

He is just at a point where the Pens likely ride out the contract. They will never get what the want.

You're saying two playoffs of a former MVP and playoff MVP are worth less than, say, two playoffs of a good penalty killer with some decent upside like Barclay Goodrow?

Obviously deadline trade prices fluctuate, but why do you think the bottom will fall out of the market this year?

Why? Because I’ve watched Malkin play. He’s been brutal. So ya, i think the 25 year old getting paid under a million bucks is worth more than the old guy who’s getting 9.5 and playing really poorly. It has nothing to do with the market (well, other than the flat cap), it has to do with Malkin. Why do you care about how many awards he’s won? He’s not that guy anymore.

I agree there's no way Huberdeau is involved. Someone posted Vrana (plus!) for Malkin the other day, too. That stuff is nonsense. But when an old superstar gets traded, it's usually for a 1st and a prospect. Not necessarily a high 1st or a can't-miss prospect. Then, under the cap, someone has to go the other way. That's not gonna be Bobrovsky. Because as average as Malkin has been, early this year, he hasn't been bad. Just average.

Malkin isn’t a star. He was a star. Ask yourself this question, if malkin was on waivers, would he get picked up? I honestly think its not a guarantee

If Malkin's on waivers today, every team with cap space puts in a claim, because as soon as contenders get some LTIR cap space, the team that claims Malkin and has no sentimental attachment to him gets to trade him for a 1st round pick, a decent prospect, and a little bit of dead cap space.

If we're playing what ifs, though, how many 1st picks would Florida have to add to trade Bobrovsky for Malkin, one for one?

Kind of not worth thinking about in my opinion because of the term.

I don’t think anyone wants malkin. Maybe he turns it around, but he looks washed.

People like to pretend guys have no trade value just because their performance to salary isn't what it used to be. But in fact, those are most of the guys that teams are willing to trade. Crosby and Malkin have taken turns being MVP and leading their team. Right now, it's not Gino's turn to be awesome. Doesn't mean it won't be again, sometime. If nobody's asking for him, I think Pittsburgh keep him. But if they were really willing to move him for a late pick, I think WSH clears some cap space, because they have his old KHL linemate doing pretty well, and that might be worth trying again.

How do they clear 9.5 in room? It’s not that malkin isn’t being awesome, it’s that he’s being trash.

Doesn't matter, because Pittsburgh wouldn't give away the chance to let a definite Hall of Famer retire with the only team he's played for. Simplest trade would be Orlov, one for one, with Pit retaining a bit, and WSH adding a 2nd to cover retention. Pit wouldn't do that. Because while Orlov has some positive trade value, Malkin has more. Oshie is outscoring Malkin right now, and is signed through the same age, at a lower cap hit. WSH could trade Orlov to a team that needs defense, and then swap Oshie and a late pick for Malkin, in the hope that a reunion with Ovechkin, along with another talented Russian forward in Kuznetsov, could get more production out of the best Russian center of this millenium, so far. Your argument is that teams don't have cap space, not that teams don't want Malkin. Some NYR fans would also love to play him with Panarin.

Ha, ha. It's possible that all the GMs now operate like you, but I tend to be skeptical of anyone who thinks they can predict thirty people's actions. Malkin's been an MVP and a playoff MVP. He's still a decent 2C, who can play a few spots on the power play pretty well. He's big and he hits hard. His cap hit might stop teams from signing big UFAs over the summer except...wait... the biggest UFA this summer is gonna be Hall again, and he only has two more points than Malkin, but isn't big, doesn't hit, and doesn't play center. Maybe some team would pass on a free Malkin to take a crack at overpaying RNH for longer? I don't really see it.
