Description
When it came to someone being deemed a “prospect” I went off of whether they’re a full time NHLer or not. Because of this, although only playing a handful of games, guys like Lafreniere, Stutzle, Kaprisov, and Farabee will not be included.

Here comes a flood of opinions probably lol. I'll get the ball rolling - Addison isn't the Wild's best prospect and Quinn is way too high.

I’m super high on Addison. I think he’s a great 2 way guy. When it comes to Quinn idk I like his shot. You’re right though, I will move him down.

Edit: Moved him, thanks for the feedback!

If Bouchard isn’t called a prospect anymore then sure Broberg. If he is called a prospect, then Bouchard is definitely our best.

I think guys that are already playing in the NHL (which excludes Jamie Drysdale) like Tim Stutzle and Kirill Kaprizov (a possible Calder Trophy finalist) should be included.

Edit: Sorry -- I paid no attention to either your Team Explanation or the post title. Sorry!

How is Byfield number 2 on this list. He looked awful not once but twice at wjc20.
Which is the stiffest competition he's ever had. He was slow as hell looking with no 1st step.
Meanwhile McMichael who looked far far far better than him, is the bottom of the list?

Did anyone see Askarov at WJC? Im pretty sure I saw all his games & thought the guy had plenty of holes. If it was me, I'd feel much more comfortable if I had Knight or another young GK like Hart.

Askarov scares me ... more bust potential

Potential... it was stated from day 1 that he’s not as NHL ready then most, but has huge upside... not to mention McMichael is a year older

lot of hype no results.
If you are going to be a star player in this league people know it by his age because they are out playing everyone else.
He's slow, you can't fix that. Tends to happen with most guys who are 6'4 +, but unlike the few who aren't he hasn't shown the speed. If you aren't fast at 19 you ain't never gonna be.

Disagreed

For one Byfield is 18 right now.. if he was born less then a month later he would’ve been in the 2021 draft instead, so all the players at the WJC were a year or even close to 2 older.. which is HUGE at that age, especially while going against the best in the world

2nd.. he can skate, really well.. read a few scouting reports, it didn’t show that much at WJC cause he got outmatched quite a bit

for a 17-18 year old at 6’4 who obviously didn’t fill his frame yet and has to adjust (all players that age who r that big do) but still had scouts marvel at his skating ability.. u can image who good he’ll be when he grows into it

This is the lot of hype
1st, almost every player his age didn't "fill their frame out" so I'm not sure why that is an excuse.
2nd he looked slow as hell with his peers. If you think 1 year is increasing his speed you are kidding yourself. You either have that or you don't. Players don't magically find speed. McDavid was always fast, so much can be said for everyone else. They guys who gain speed from working on it are the guys like OV who drop weight. But he ain't got no weight to drop. The tape says it all on that part.
3rd his age isn't an issue. There are many of players his age who have played well at wjc20. Hell no one is looking at Wright and saying...he's slow. That's just bs.

I don't sit around making excuses for guys. I wouldn't recommend you do either.
You are what you are till you prove otherwise. To think that 1 year is making the difference between what he is and what the other players around him are is nonsense. He does not move well on skates. I don't care what a scout says. I watched it live. I seen it. Meanwhile a guy like Stutzle was straight fire and at the next level it shows.

It's like people on here still trying to make Galchenyuk a 1st line player. He ain't it. They need to get over it, and you should too.
Byfield is what he is. Tall, which tends towards players being slow. That isn't gonna change. At 6'4 you either have speed or you don't. It's not like it's just magically going to come one day. When Wilson was 18 no one said, he's slow. The same is true for Josh Anderson. They had speed at his age. Why do you give this guy a pass.
It just doesn't work that way. There is no "one day" for that. It's today. It's the can you keep up with everyone else or can't you. Because I hate to break it to you, everyone else is gonna get faster too under that theory.
I honestly don't think he has the speed to be a top 6 player at this point. 2 WJC in a row don't lie. You can't hide it playing inferior players there. You can either keep up or you can't. Because that is really the biggest test these guys get at their age. No part of his performance there spelled out top prospect.

.... that’s a outdated way of thinking

There r 2 things teams look for the most on a prospect.... potential and how well their game translates to the NHL,

Let’s say... Lundell, he was one of the most NHL ready prospects at the 2020 draft but went 12th, why? Because of potential... the other 11 teams believe their guy will surpass him

Potential and development curve is the key... take all the NHL ready prospects u want, what matters is who’s better in their prime (23-30)

Still remember back then when we took Scheif.. in 2011, reached a bit to get him

Next 2 years he was struggling at the NHL level and constantly falling making people nickname him “Bambi” and though him a bust.. after that well the rest is history, he grew into his frame (6’3) and is now a #1 center

Some players just need more time that’s all

1st no one looked at Scheif as not being where he should be around his peers. Hell when he was at wjc20 he stood out.
2nd no one thought of him as slow on the ice. Which really is the point here. You can say whatever else but he looked sluggish not once but twice at wjc20. Hell even guys like McMichael were getting caught from behind when they played team US and he looked twice as fast and disruptive than Byfield.
This is not the same game that people are still drafting guys for in a lot of ways, you still got people out there trying to play old hockey. You can't play the Getzlaf style center in the NHL anymore. They hoped Byfield would be a PLD kind of player. But PLD was never that damn slow. PLD can move. This is not about his "frame" or his "needing to learn how to play away from the puck" or whatever,, he competed against guys who are right there with him in needing to do all of that as well.
This is about the fact that he is simply too slow. I don't know how anyone could watch his play at both WJC and say otherwise. That isn't going to change. The NHL is a track meet. If you want to play top 6 in it, you have to be able to move.
Byfield has the skill set to be a bottom 6 guy at this point because he doesn't move well.
I hate to say it, but the two biggest factors of being an NHL forward today are 1 speed, 2 stick handling. Because if you don't have the speed you simply won't be a top 6 guy anymore. It doesn't matter what else you bring. You're a liability on the ice if you can't keep up.
You have to realize that at some point. We can make every excuse for it, but every player at wjc has basically the same excuses. But they were so much faster than he is.
You aren't going to line a guy up with his foot speed up against the fastest players in the NHL and expect good things to happen. He'll get eaten alive. Take all but a fraction of a seconds for guys like McDavid, Point, Stutzle, MacKinnon, Barzal, etc... to blow by him. Can you say honestly that you really believe that's going to change at this point. Because 18 year old any of those guys is way faster than he is.

Everyone is trying to keep up with those guys. If what you wanted when you drafted a guy 2nd over all was a defensive 3C who starts in his own zone great, but you don't draft 2OA for that.
Until he can show foot speed capable of playing with these guys he ain't selling me on hype. Like 80% of the "growth" in the game is can you actually keep pace, which for most guys is on a mental aspect not a foot aspect. If you are already behind in the feet, watch out. The NHL game is faster than WJC. If you can't keep up there you're in trouble at the next level because the fastest guys at WJC is basically NHL top 6s guys.
So some scouts can talk about potential and grow into game etc.. but at 18 years old you are either physically fast enough to play or you aren't. As there really is no amount of training you can do to catch up. The slow kid in the class is still gonna be the slow kid. That don't change. People don't just add speed like that. Believe me there are a lot of people who wish they could. It doesn't work that way.

Valid point ngl

But here’s what I think

Byfield was considered 2nd, 3rd overall pick in the draft by the whole hockey community in such a stacked draft.. by guys who dedicate their career to scouting young players potential

I’m not going to say I know better then them

U mentioned speed, well the Jets have a young guy, Logan Stanley who was drafted in 2016, 16-18th overall and was 6’7 who was looking like a bust last season (awkward skating and at the slow side) but this season he came and his skating improved at least 50%, now he’s a main stay on the Jets blue line

My point is everybody’s different, early risers, late bloomers, players hitting their peak at different ages and declining as well
