TOR doesn't need Ekholm -- but also, NSH should be able to get a deal like that without retaining on Ekholm, so I'd expect them to get a better package if they retained. I don't think Dermott or Liljegren (maybe) would interest them either. Robertson would, but I doubt TOR would be interested in losing a promising, ELC player like that.

Can see the Leafs pucking up another D, but I would be thinking more along the lines of a Jordie Benn, TVR, Brett Kulak type. Effective 3rd pairing minutes, low asset cost.

LOVE Ekholm, but leafs don't need him right now. However, if we lost a Dman to expansion, maybe this would be a good trade after the expansion draft.

If we trade Staal on the TDL, it will be for 2nd + B prospect.

It doesn't lack long term thinking, Dermott is going to be moved whether it be this season or expansion or next season there isn't a need for him with Sandin coming up. Ekholm is a top defender and at a low caphit would you not want three great pairings? His deal expires at the same time as riellys so the money will still be there to resign Rielly and you end up with the absolute best defense in the league for basically liljegren and a first.
